As the title says I want to gain muscle mass. the two things people have said to me is '' lift 6 reps'' or ''lift 8-10 reps''. I have tried both but what helps me improve in mass the most? as you can probably see i'm new to this site n'all.

Upper body rep ranges for gaining size is best in the 6-12 range. For lower body 10-20 is probably best.
8-12 works best for me.

Be careful in thinking that you HAVE to do a certain number of reps. Yeah, certain ranges work for different goals, but never lose focus on form. If you can't finish out the last few repetitions of a set, then do as many reps as you can with GOOD form. Go to failure with solid, consistent form and you can't go wrong.
