Making Powdered Oats....
I am now, on the advice of my trainer, having a oat & protein shake for breakfast. I have tried a smoothie maker etc, but cannot seem to get the oats into a powdery form. They all seem to clump up on the bottom of the cup.
I tried to get it down, but just gagged...I know I know.....whimp.
Anyway, anyone have any advise for getting oats into a powder form to mix seamlessly into a shake without clumps or pieces?
Thanks

Curious...why and what time of day is he recommending this? I suppose you can put the oats in a food processor and blast em...then mix with the protien. If it too clumpy..use more water or milk.......Me? I would just make them seperatley and enjoy them that way.
edit...reread..ok for breakfast...so just make them seperatley..why does it have to be in a shake form?

Just as my morning shake with my protein.
I have tried regular oatmeal, the consistency makes me gag....
Like I said I tried the smoothie maker, but it really didn't do too much for the oats.
The threads I have been reading say to try a coffee grinder. So I think I ay go buy one and try it out.

Just a thought...what about oat flour? Is it not just milles oats? Could be your answer there.
-
what about like a coffee grinder??
-
get a coffee grinder or just blend the oats first

Just MHO, but on the side or powdered in a shake, you are still gonna have a consistency issue.
And since you are trying make it into a flour anyway, why just not buy oat flour & save the hassle?

I use Arrowhead Mills Oat Flour from Vitacost.

meh, I just eat it. Much more filling and better tasting with the same effect. IMO

^^^This. I tried a food processor, but it didn't get them fine enough. Coffee grinder did the trick. In some stores, you can by oat flour, which is more convenient.

I agree with the coffee grinder. I mill down my flax seed in it too. Love it on my oatmeal.

I use a Vita Mix. It's like a blender but it pulverizes anything. If you put it on high it will pulverize anything into liquid so you can use it like a whole food juicer (you get the juice but also the fiber). I pour water, 2 scoops protein powder and 1/4 to 1/2 cup oatmeal in and blend it on low. It totally pulverizes the oats into a smooth drink.
Just type Vita Mix into google and you'll find it.

I (personally) like oatmeal, so I don't mind whole oats in with the protein- kinda like a pudding. You do need to use a spoon and eat it like cereal, though, in this form.

Making powdered oats
It is easy!!!! Just use a regular blender. Put about 2 cups in at a time. Any more or any less does not work as well!!! You can pulse or put on low to med. I make a whole container at a time. I use an old protein powder container to store for future use. I than put two scoops in with my protein powder in a shaker bottle and there you go!!! I make up two the night before for the next morning and after my workout. Then just add water, milk or what ever you like when needed!!! It saves a lot of time!!!

Get the Magic Bullet. I put ground oatmeal in my protein smoothies/shakes. This does an excellent job, you get a bunch of cups with it, and just throw them in the dishwasher. If you don't want the oatmeal to clump, put fruit or whatever in the cup first, then milk, then the oatmeal on that with whatever else and some more yogurt/milk on top.
This thing does a perfect job.
Costco sells a great version of it because there are more cups with theirs, but I'm sure you've seen them other places.

I go through one a year approximately - using it at least 2-3 times per day (myself and kids), and sometimes up to 6 or 7 times, it doesn't last forever, but its worth it.
It comes with two blades, one for mixing, one for making ground anything. Also comes with smaller cups for doing the grinding.

I've got a Ninja blender which isn't as awesome as a Vita Mix, but it does a good job of pulverizing the whole oats when I put them in smoothies. I don't have to grind them first. I sometimes add a 1/4 cup of oats to my smoothies, whether it's a fruit smoothie with vanilla whey powder, or my new favorite, a banana peanut butter smoothie with chocolate whey. I don't even notice that the oats are there.

I have the Costco one too, does better job than my Oster Beehive blender. The flat blade works good.
I've just about burned up all my cups, the tabs break off. But this pulverized oats quite well with the little flat blade. Obv do oats in batch, then add to liquids for a drink. Makes good powder to add to a meatloaf, and smooth oat cookies.
Although I prefer to eat my oats cooked in a bowl with peanut butter, milk and some sugar in the raw.

Yes, this happens in our home as well. I don't sweat it though. At the price of this thing, and the high usage from myself and our teenagers, I'm happy to buy a new one every year. Costco will also take it back within the year if it breaks, and I've done this once, but I didn't two other times because my conscience got the better of me and I figured we got our money's worth.
If mine were to stop working suddenly, I'd be over to Costco within a couple of hours to get another one :)

I'm sure the OP would have been grateful for your responses 3 1/2 years ago when he posted this topic. I haven't seen the guy post here in a long time.

+1 for Magic Bullet, Works perfectly for grinding oats.
I use it for a post workout shake, Oats, Peanut butter, Milk, Whey and a banana all in one cup and blend for 15 seconds with the Bullet.
-
standard coffe bean grinder works great
-
Bullet works, but I ground an entire protein tub full at a time so i just use a cheap blender and grind.

I've been making them using water, regular oatmeal, peanut butter and chocolate flavored protien from gnc. Put water in first, then add everything else then blend, not had any problems with climping and tastes ok

Instead of adding oats to your protein, add protein to your oats ;-)
Add a scoop of vanilla protein to 1/2 cup of cooked oats (use a little more water than normal), toss in 1/2 banana if you want to add some sweetness. Tastes almost like vanilla pudding. Complete breakfast in less than 2 minutes. This is my go-to breakfast when I am short on time in the morning.

I watched the mega ninja food processor infomercial and it's capable of turning concrete into a smooth delicious shake. The secret is it's dual blade technology.

I'm curious, especially since you're NOT a little guy, as to WHY? he recommended the oats. Did he give you a reason, in terms of a reasonable scientific explanation of the results expected? Or, did he expect you to take his advice on faith? In my experience, a trainer's nutritional knowledge is often very limited. What are you doing? Bulking, Cutting, etc?
The main reason I ask this is that if you're at all overweight, it's exactly the WRONG advice...

LOL, dude it's seriously not too far from the truth. I got my ninja originally just to mix milk and whey in a cup but man I use that thing for everything now. Turns rock solid frozen fruit to smoothies with no problem.

I use a Vitamix 5000 daily (for many years now) and always include oats. Its usually a mix of oats, whey isolate, banana, organic berries, and flax seed oil. When reducing carbs I lower the oats, drop the banana and add fiber one original into the mix (1/2 cup = 60 cals and 14g fiber but it unfortunately has aspertame) A good blender like a Vitamix will allow you to put shakes together in seconds without clumping issued.

Not sureif word in English is correct, but malted oats are oat bran? Not necessarily powder, but drinkable in protein shakes. Here they sell it in stores, i just pour it from package to blender with quark, crushed lin seeds and banana.
No hassle and drinkable.
