Right on (back to Deadlift topic) :)
Nice work with 365x4 bud, that'd a challenging set for certain.
Not sure if anyone cares, but I took mine from 425-500 without ever doing more than 1 rep per set from 315 on up. Part because hex plates ruin my life (roll all over the g.damn place after each rep), and part because I didn't feel the need to do higher reps in prep for a max single.
This time 'round, I plan on REALLY working deficits to help my piss POOR floor drive. My low back is king chief in my frame, but my leg drive is like the little boy getting water for the chiefs.....weak and lame.
I plan on 3x5 reps or something to really crank the deficits.

Not happy with it at all. I should have had 365x6 in me, but I think it's my own fault for not pushing myself enough. I was saving energy for a lift that I didn't end up making, that I've done in the past. :(

I'm assuming you did this after your hiatus... How long did it take you? I think I'm going to start working no more than 1 rep on my heavy days, since even the "warm up" sets seem to really kick the **** out of me with deadlifts. And hex plates blow - the one time I used them, I wanted to cry.

Story of my life right here. My squat's gotten a lot better over the past month, so I've been noticing more drive from my quads when I deadlift. Certainly better than my more or less Romanian deadlift in the video on the first page. Still, not where it could be.

By deficits, you mean your legs?

I wonder why that is.

By deficits, I mean standing on a raised object (like a 4" step thingie) to make the start of it more leg driven. I squat ATG, even de-loaded on pins sometimes, so that should help the floor drive.
Well I did 425 in May 2008, then started back light on deads last fall (205 cramped up my hammies for reference of how skinny I had gotten). Worked back over 300 in 4-6 weeks, then putzed up to 405 or so. About 10 weeks ago, I just decided to one day max out and got 425.
At that point (when I hit 425) I set a deadlift 500 goal by May 27th (my 30th bday).
Well all my journal buddies kept pushing other movements (DB incline, Seated MP, BB curl, etc) so I didn't deadlift at all the months of March and April (kinda 'forgot' about the goal TBH). Not once. Worked up to a 6 pps ATG Hack Squat for 6 reps, so my legs were getting hit hard. Anyways, I added deadlift back in for 4 workouts before hitting 500. First week I worked up to 365, then 405, then 430. And last week I just told myself let's go 455, see how it feels. It went up like nothing, then I just said fuk it and put 500 on the bar. Rest is history.
My mind lifted that more than my body. 4 sessions in 3 months (2 being totally off) shouldn't add 70lbs to my deadlift. Weird.
I know 500 is decent, but 6 plates is another world of difficult. I know for certain I will have to improve my floor drive, and prob buy a nice inzer belt for safety. Im unbelted in everything I do. Entire 12 year lifting career. Belts feel weird to me, but 600lbs is 600lbs ya know?

Very interesting. You've motivated me!
I also only squat ATG, which ends up being 100% ROM (I can sit at the bottom of my ROM). I did 275x4 and 300x1, so I'm hoping the fact that my squat has increased by 25 pounds in the last month will help my deads. I'm focusing on my squats until I get 315x5, at which point I'm switching back to deadlift/bench focus.
This journal was a really good idea. Having all these people in on something makes the goal very much more tangible for me.

Nice deads music man, nearly 4 plates, take a multi next time.
-
Nice lifting musicality.
Dont sweat not gettin the 405. As you say, you wer just unaccustomed to lifting at that particular time. Its still in you. (oh that wasn't a reference to the whole "ass is sore" thing btw :p )

I just ordered a purple belt from these guys: http://www.bestbelts.net/
The guy, Dean, custom tailored it 31-35 inches and made it 13 mm thick. SO pumped to get that thing in the mail on Friday. Part of me just doesn't feel comfortable lifting more than 90% of my 1RM without a belt, because I can't tell if my back is rounding or not. On the 365x4, I stopped because I thought I was starting to round. I asked my mom, and she said that my back was quite arched on all four reps. With a belt, I get proprioceptive feedback if I start to round.
I haven't taken multis for 6 months or so... do they REALLY help?

^^^ That guys a beast man! Cheeky whistle at the top of the last rep too. lol

Konstantin is the man! I love watching his videos. I'm half-Russian actually, so I understand all the things he's saying (it's my second language).
The cameraman is saying:
-rigidness, get speed.
-GET SPEED.
-Pull! (He says it in a form that is usually used on dogs but is acceptable in training - in English it's he pulls, she pulls, they pull, we pull... In Russian it's a different ending for each form and the one he uses is a "degrading" one. It's not really seen as "disrespectful" but you would never use it in everyday speech.)
-Speed, rigid! (direct translation, same as the first line but in the reverse order)
-MORE.
-Pull! (same form)
-

At 19 seconds into this one, one of the trainers is basically like "COME ON WANKER DOG"
The word doesn't really translate, but I felt the English word "wanker" comes closest.

What a f*cking monster.
Music man, in the vid you posted what does he say at :30?
That's probably the manliest laugh I've ever heard (no homo?)

"Vot tak vot, ha ha ha"
Once again, no "direct" translation. Closest thing I can think of:
"And that's how it's done, ha ha ha."

Yeah... it's all about the upper back rounding, IMO. Most people don't have the control over their bodies not to continue the round to their lower backs, though.
how much did that belt run you?
$60 flat.
Look how awesome the customer service is:
To whom it may concern,
I just ordered a belt from you after reading many great reviews on bodybuilding.com and your website, and hearing your quality guarantee.
I have a few questions before you make/send the belt:
-Is there any way that you can fit the belt to be a size 31-34? My waist is 32, but it fluctuates and is smaller when I tighten a belt around it. Could you include a hole for 35 as well?
-Would you recommend the soft, or the normal belt for a serious weightlifter? All of my personal record lifts have been with belts, but I'm curious as to what would best my performance. I will most likely be gearing my training toward powerlifting in the future, so I'd like to have a belt that I can keep for a lifetime.
Thanks,
Andre

Dean,
Thanks so much for your timely response. Do whatever you think will be best - I trust you to know better than me. I've heard that 13 inch belts can have a tendency to leave a little bit of unwanted extra space in the back, but I don't really hold a preference. The soft holes sound good to me. Do what works, I've heard great things about your company!
Thanks again,
Andre

Andre Yes on the sizing Questions. We will make sure that you have prime adjustment holes for the range of 31 thru 35 inches. What we do on the soft belt is before the belt is made we work on the area around the holes to make that leather softer. We are just "breaking in " some of your belt to make it easier to get on and off when you first get your belt. The tight fiber in great quality leather is what gives you the support. That is the only leather we use and is called sole leather. The belt you have ordered will do the job for you if you train for PL ing.I will make your belt a little thicker for you if you want me to like 13mm.Then your belt will be max thickness and we will custom size your belt for the range of 31 thru 35.I think making the leather around the holes a little softer will help you break the belt in.We are not doing anything that time will not do.We are just making it happen quicker.Leather is a great gift from nature and it will adjust to your body in time.Thats when you really get the most out of your belt.I hope I have helped you.I will put these notes with your order and make your belt by them.If you need more help feel free to email us.Thanks Dean
Thank you thank you thank you! I'll certainly let you know when I get it, and I'll save my heavy squats for when it comes in the mail. I expect great things. You're a pleasure to deal with.
I apologize for sending three emails.
Would you recommend a single or double prong for a 13 mm belt?
-Andre

I learned something I never would've known today. I'll go with the single prong, softened 13 mm purple athletic belt then. I haven't been this excited to get my hands on something since my first bike.
You've got a lot of passion in your products and it's rare to see someone showing so much concern for their customers' satisfaction. How did you get started with this whole thing?

I think about doing a set of high reps and the first thing I think of is getting that belt off.It is easier to get a single prong off.The double prong story started in the late 70's when some cheap belts ripped out at a big meet called the YMCA Nationals in Columbus Ohio.It scared everybody when Danny Wobler was Squating 800lbs plus pounds and his belt ripped uot.He was tough as nails and he just got another belt and did the lift.On that day the double prong belt changed.People thought it was safer to wear a double prong. All of the good belts made today will never tear.We test leather and I hope to have our test on our web site soon.It will be fun just to see what we do.Take Care Dean

and on and on... Definitely a good buy, and I haven't even gotten it yet.
The guy Dean owns and apparently runs the company more or less on his own... Great guy to deal with.

might have to buy myself one in the future. money is tight these days so im gonna have to lay off for awhile

I'm in on this.
Current DL max is 332x3
(2 25kg plates, 1 15kg plate on each side, I think that math is right)
going back on Thursday and seeing if I can get 340 or 350.
And I'm just figuring by 6 plates you mean 6x45lb plates on each side?
i.e. 585lb DL? Sounds like a fun goal to me.
