Stop. A very unnatural movement which easily could hurt you, and there are no benefits compared to doing it with a barbell.

I am no experts, but if I remember well, the smith machine presuppose that all your joint will be align with the machine when you do the exercise which is false in 99% of the population. As your join are not properly align, you put too much stress on them and you might end up with a injury.
If you really want to squat, just do back squat in a power rack, start with low weight till you get your form and add some weight slowly. You can ask for spot or/and use the safety bar if you fell unsure of yourself.
Just squat at least parrallel and if you can, deeper. The squat is a formidable exercise for mass gain, strenght and raising your testosterone level.
Have fun

Pattern overload syndrome, restricted planes of motion - the list goes on. Just use a barbell when/if possible. If you gym does not have free weights then you should probably find one that does.

bingo!!!

tried it, didn't like the restriction of movement.
-
I did smith squats for 2 years and then about a year ago I went to power rack squats and what a difference. The smith squat is so unnatural feeling and toward the end of the second year my knees starting irritating me after squatting. I would definitely switch to free weight squats.
-
i would stop using it. the smith only allows movement in a fixed plane of motion. almost never are the same muscles or patterns of movement replicated any movement that a human does. even though the bar only looks like it moves up and down, all the joints are revolving and this simple movement is not simple. the smith locks into a very unnatural movement pattern which has the potential to stress inappropriate structures and not train the body in various planes.

haha u guys better hope the mod diamond delts doesnt see you all putting down the smith machine :P there was this very same thread a couple days ago and every1 was saying the smith machine is ****. diamond delts comes in. every1 got pwned :P basically his point was that when your experienced you can use the smith squat to target the exact area of your legs you want to hit which you cant do with free weight. also there are many different types of smith machines not all of them just go straight up n down. oh n he prefers front squats on the smith too... some food for thought :P

Maybe it's just me... but squats on a smith machine hurt my lowerback.

How very dare you try squats on the smith machine
-
I squat on a Smith occasionally, and have done so, off and on, for years. It allows me to use different foot positions not possible with a barbell. I also do barbell squats, and sometimes use dumbells, too. Everything has it's purpose.

oh man I do squats only on the Smith machine, I have had more than one back injury doing regular barbell squats...but the thing people are implying here is..that you will not gain as much mass on your legs with a smith machine squat than with regular squat? is this what i understand? that people like me are cheating themselves out of bigger thighs cos they are not using free weights for squating?...my thing is since i injured my back twice doing regular barbell squats I trust the smith machine more...!no problems there...ever!

Personally I care about my stabilizer muscles and translating my strength to real world activities. If your an athlete it's much better to do barbell squats. I personally think regular squats is a better mass builder. I mean it's much harder to do less weight with regular squats than it is with much more on smith. I'm not really impressed by anyone doing a lot of weight on the smith machine... it's kind of lame.

the smith isn't a leverage machine, man. it doesn't give a mechanical advantage of the sort that would make lifting a weight easier to do. ie, a 405 squat = 405. if it were like... HS rows vs BB rows, i'd get where you're coming from.

Sorry bro. You are NOT going to impress squatdeadpress with any of your poultry numbers on the smith machine. The man is just too hardcore.

Yes it is. I am not a big advocate on too many new pieces of equipment because most of it is gimmicky ****. But this smith/rack is the real deal. I tried and immediately fell in love with it. Very smooth linear bushing system that makes using it with heavy weights a breeze.

Extremely innovative. I wonder how long till we see these starting popping up in gyms throughout the country.

one of the craziest things i've seen so far was a workout the lead trainer at the bally near my house was doing. he is a competetive natural bber, and the guy is a friggin' monster...
atg (with feet slightly forward like with hacks) smith squats... going 3/4 of the way up, pausing for a two count, and then going down again with a controlled negative. no lockout for rest. 405 for 8 reps. wtf.
next time i see him, i'm going to tell him to man up and do some real work.

Ha ha. Somebody better tell Markus Ruhl and Dennis Wolf to get off the smith if they ever want some "hardcore" legs.

All of you do not impress me with you pity excuse for a squat attempt... just kidding.
I guess I went a bit overboard. It's just at my gym too many people are machine only with horrible form to boot.
