Are you trying to gain size or lose fat? Outside of newbie gains it is nigh impossible to do both.
If you have a lot of excess fat, you can recomp by eating around maintenance, lifting and using cardio to push you into a deficit. If you don't have a lot of excess fat, then you better know a whole helluva lot about diet (which if you're posting in here, I'm assuming you don't... not intending that as an insult, just observing) or you can either cut or bulk.
Yea I barley started really lifting this year .
Well Put!
Few questions. I know you're not supposed to work the same muscles within a 48/72 hour period, especially if they're still sore, but can you work on them twice in one day? Or is this still doing more harm than good?
In terms of adding muscle, would a split body workout be best for someone who has little to no body fat and muscle? If anyone's familiar with the Spartacus blood and sand workout I plan on starting that next week, though at my own pace as I'm pretty positive it's gonna kick my ass. One of the main reasons is that I only have dumbbells to work with right now and this workout only uses them in terms of weights.
I've exercised more or less everyday for the past few years and have seen little if any muscle development, which I now realize is more than likely due to my lack of a proper diet. I'm going to start having protein shakes(with bananas, strawberries, and/or blueberries mixed in so the protein can do it's job) after each workout. In terms of cardio, I don't plan on doing it often (maybe 2-3 times a week at most for the first few weeks of my strength training) as I'm ridiculously scrawny. I did some calculator and evidently I burn about 2,700 calories a day. So I plan on counting them starting next week and adding at least 500, if not a 1,000 a day so I can gain 1-2 pounds a week. I'm 5'11, and 150 right now. My goal weight is 165-170, which is evidently still in a healthy range for my height.
Idk, if anybody has some tips for increasing size in an effective way please don't hesitate to suggest as I'm tired of being this skinny. Also, if there's any healthy or well known ways to add size/muscle in a short amount of time please let me know. Just keep in mind that I only have dumbbells right now, so if there's any good workouts that only use them let me know.
Thanks in advance for any assistance given.
Thanks for the info!
Would you guys consider W's a good exercise for a shoulder workout? I'm torn on keeping them in my routine or to just scrap them.
Thanks in advance and reps to who helps.

your weights by 50% or take a week off entirely. The following week, pick up where you left off. This lets you recover from accumulated fatigue of your muscles and central nervous system.
Awesome tips, definitely will put into use

Hi Vox,
These questions might be stupid for trained people but they are of great help for beginners and those who are thinking of joining gym.
I too was not aware of most of the questions before joining gym and I searched on net.
Thanks for posting them in a same threat.
thanks for the rest between sets and the rep part, that has helped me a lot :) thanks bro
This question may already been answered, but i read so many post that the answer to my question never came up. How can i maintain my six pack when im bulking?.... Im not doing slow bulking im trying 2 bulk heavy, like 1/2-1 pound every week, and i dont want to bulk and have a high bf to the point where my abs become invisible. Should I try to consume foods that are high in calories and low in fat?.....and I get nervous of trying to do High intensity cardio, because I want to have a low body percentage fat, but I dont want to lose weight, because one of my main goals is to gain weight. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it..... please help
Im in the same situation. Just bulk up on good calories ;) and you will see minimal fat gains.
great tips. thanks a lot
but i have a challenging question for you, Vox. i've started to workout a month ago. i am doing well with weights and machines but my biggest problem is cardio.

Just try to jog a little more each session. 2 mins. this time, 2 min. 15 sec. next time, etc.
Some interval training of jogging then walking then jogging again may help as well.

If you want something with some structure, google Couch to 5k. Great program for getting into running from no base.
