Sticky Thread Sticky: The Bench Form Thread

We see a lot of threads asking for bench form critiques on this forum. I feel like most of these threads are made because people don’t know how to critique their own form. They just don’t know what to look for. I’m hoping to narrow that gap with this thread. I’m not going to touch on everything,...

Pull up or chin up: which is easier on elbows

Well, I finally did a chin up Friday from a dead hang. First step on my pull-up goal. But I have been having trouble with my right elbow, which I posted about here last week. Anyway, in my attempt to do a second chin-up, there was an audible "pop" in the elbow area. Today my elbow is stiff. I...

Can Hypertrophy and Strength be achieved simultaneously?

So I'm doing a periodization routine similar to Shortcut to Size. You start light on the first week with high reps, then gradually as the weeks progress you add weight and lessen the rep range. It works, don't get me wrong, but really only for hypertrophy. My strength gains not so much. At least...

Smile Is training to failure necessary for hypertrophy?

I always do the 3 sets 8-12 rep range on chest workouts, and every set I make sure to squeeze at the top position for about a second and focus on the eccentric for at least 3 seconds. After the first set I'll usually increase the load a bit more to make sure I'll get fewer reps for like 10. Then...

Question Weak Overhead Press

Hi, I feel like my Overhead press is not up to par with my other lifts, which is weird since I consider my shoulders relatively OK (thus meaning I've never considered it a weakspot, unlike my arms for example.) I can bench 205x6, deadlift 275x6 (don't really deadlift much so don't know if its...

Rep ranges for rows?

Hey. I'm doing the Coolcicada PPL, and it has me doing bench 3x5 on push days and 3x5 rows on pull days. With benching everything seems fine, but when I do rows in that rep range they tend to be so heavy that I feel I don't really get a good mind muscle connection, and I can't really feel the...

Can I have a Deadlift form check please?

Hello, this is a 200lb deadlift which I have dropped weight from 240lb as I was told my lower back was rounding & I wasn't hinging at the hips enough. This feels slightly harder now & it makes my legs feel as if they are actually wobbling for some reason. My hamstrings also feel tight. I have a...

Deadlift question

I have back day and after that I have leg day. Is it ok to deadlift 2 days a row? On back day I do heavy 1-5 reps and leg day I do 8-12 reps. Also, I do romanian deadlift on leg day and conventional/sumo on back. Which would be better for back?

I can't do ankle circles with keeping my foot straight?

Anyone know any possible causes for this? Or do I need to just practice? My toes raise up and down with the motion of my ankle.

squat form check (ankle inversion)

so first off I apologize for the angle and quality, I hope its good enough to critique. Firstly I squat high bar with a CLOSE stance. Unless this is the only fix for my problem I would rather not change my squatting style for right now. I don't get any pain before during or after. I also warm up...

Question about reps

So basicly it seems like everyone says 8-12 reps for hypertrophy, anything below that is strength and anything over that is endurance. So how come many of the big bodybuilders do 15+ reps? Wouldnt they wanna stay in the 8-12 range? EDIT: Kali Muscle for an example emphasizes 15+ reps.

Muscle growth and boxing. Is it possible?

I'm currently doing Shortcut to Size by Jim Stoppani and I want to add some serious cardio to burn off the extra calories I don't expend from lifting. I just love boxing and I miss doing it in fear of it eating my muscle gains, which I've seen a lot of. If it is possible to be done, when should...

does anyone ONLY use resistance bands?

I bought resistance bands just for 1 exercise - the "pull apart" to strengthen my back, since you guys said that other than exercise bands if there wasn't a dedicated machine to do it I couldn't really simulate it at a gym. They're great! I've since bought several, increasing my resistance. ...

Pullup form question

I want to make sure if this is normal. When doing pullups in any grip (happens more in neutral) as I'm pulling my face/upper body tends to move away from the bar which makes me need to horizontal pull to get closer to the bar to finish the movement. I'm just annoyed at it not feeling like a smooth...

Should I do eccentric motion?

Hi, I read that slow eccentric ( a motion in the opposite direction, when pulling the barbel for bench press for example) training is better for hypertrophy than concentric motion (direct motion). But it also creates a lot more muscle fatigue. I can't do nearly as much reps when I move slowly in...
