Sticky Thread Sticky: The Bench Form Thread

We see a lot of threads asking for bench form critiques on this forum. I feel like most of these threads are made because people don’t know how to critique their own form. They just don’t know what to look for. I’m hoping to narrow that gap with this thread. I’m not going to touch on everything,...

Does the thickness of the barbell or handle make any difference for rows?

I prefer using cable machines to train my back and I always rotate between wide grip and narrow grip rows. The wide grip handle at my gym is pretty thick. Is there any major difference if I were to hold it with a narrow underhand grip as opposed to the shorter and thinner handle? I know this is...

Dumbell shoulder press at slight angle?

Dumbell shoulder press at 90 degrees vs shoulder press with slight angle like say 100-110 degrees. Which is more optimal? The 90 degree shoulder press seems more difficult so this seems to isolate the shoulders more? After a left rotator cuff surgery intermittent low back pain the shoulder...

In your opinion is 260lb bench good?

Just hit 260lb bench press. I’m only 152lb so it’s a 1.7xBW bench. I’d personally call it ok/good but not good/great. I really can’t see myself saying my bench is good/great until I hit 300lb+ cause Then I know it’s good. Also I’m not saying I’m not happy with it just Wondering how the community...

How often should you be hitting leg day?

I’ve been hitting legs 4 times a week. It wasn’t so bad until I started working again. I’m on my feet 8 hours a day in a factory lifting moderately heavy things. I don’t feel to much soreness. But I have notice that it’s harder to do squats. Am I ****ing up my legs even tho I don’t feel any pain or...

Standing-Press vs. High Incline or Seated Overhead

I'm really beginning to question the value of a standing press. You can't lift as much weight vs. seated, and especially vs. a bit of a lean back on the bench. You can work your abs separately, you can do front-squats, and really lots of other full-body lifts to build full body strength. You can't...

Any issues with sticking to Hammer Strength Chest press for a while?

I run PPL and I decided to try out the HS for chit's and giggles. I felt my chest targeted very well from this exercise. Any issue in doing this in place of the bench press for a while if I'm a recreational lifter whose goals are purely hypertrophy? I like to start with the OHP on some push days...

Bench isn’t improving

Before lockdown I could get 80kg x 10. But now after trying to get my lifts back up, my barbell bench is still lacking. My other lifts are going fine except chest exercises. Overhead press is good, rows good, etc. They’re all going up slightly. I’ve noticed my chest hasn’t been the same since the...

Question Sprinting vs Jogging/Walking - Calories Burned

Hello, I primarily weight lift 4x/week and that is my main form of working out. I recently started jogging 3x/week for entertainment, exploration of different areas and as another way to challenge my body. From my research, it sounds like: Jogging slowly or walking 1 mile burns about 100...

How many reps of 225 can you bench?

It looks like the last thread asking this is over ten years old. Since this is one classic measure of strength endurance (such as the NFL uses), it would be interesting to put down a time stamp for the forum as we begin the new decade. For me, it's 12. How many can you all do?

When doing RDLs...

When doing RDLs, do you push into the ground with your legs and squeeze your glutes while pushing your hips forward to pull the weight back up? I only recently read to squeeze your glutes and it's helped me not to feel strained in the back so I'm going to keep doing that. But I'm not sure...
