Sticky Thread Sticky: The Bench Form Thread

We see a lot of threads asking for bench form critiques on this forum. I feel like most of these threads are made because people don’t know how to critique their own form. They just don’t know what to look for. I’m hoping to narrow that gap with this thread. I’m not going to touch on everything,...

Calling anyone interested in a friendly strength competition for this spring/summer

Last fall, a few of us took part in a competition/collaborative effort where we uploaded our lifts and challenged each other to greater progress. It was fun, and to the best of my knowledge all of us made improvements. My squat is finally out of pathetic territory but still needs a lot of work...

Question How does my deadlift form look?

Do I need to improve my deadlift? I was using lighter weights this time, not super heavy weights. I've watched deadlift tutorials on how to deadlift and been trying to improve them but I keep screwing them up no matter how many times I practice. Would it be worth it to hire a personal trainer...

Squat form check

Hi guys, Could you please critique my form? I used to have low back pain in the past when squatting, which is thankfully now gone. However I'm getting middle back pain now, which feels spinal rather then muscular. Considering the pain I'm experiencing, I wanted to ensure I perfect the form. ...

Why is pressing strength in particular so sensitive to changes in bodyweight?

This is something I've both heard from a few places but also experienced myself, anecdotally. All else being equal, there seems to be among lifters a close correlation between one's bodyweight and their pressing strength, in particular. The past few months, I've weighed about 10-15 pounds less than...

T-Bar vs Bent Over Rows

Does the hinged "fulcrum" of a T-Bar row result in any significant difference of stimulus than a normal Pendlay row? The only immediate thing that comes to mind is that a barbell row is going to stress the whole posterior chain more since you have to maintain a static hold to anchor the weight....

Question on high reps with high weight

Is it dangerous to do high reps with high weight? Like say if I hit the max amount of weight I can do during my bulking phase would it be okay to stop there and increase the amount of reps I do every week until I'm able to do 25 reps per set then do 25 reps for 3 sets with that weight when I come...

rackpulls above the knee

yeah i know this is somewhat of an "ego" lift but can it be used as an accessory movement/isolation movement to build up the traps for maximum overload? I know shrugs/power shrugs are also good options but I think the rackpull above the knee would be better for overall overload due to it being an...

Substitute for Squat? Deadlift?

Learning more about the body and proper exercise form, it's obvious I need to work on a few things before I continue squatting and deadlifting. I get a lot of posterior pelvic tilt way before my legs are parallel to the floor on a squat, similar (but not so pronounced) on the deadlift. I'm going to...

How strong should your row be relative to your bench?

It is common for presses to get an undue amount of attention in many training regimens. My own anecdotal reference and some casual reading seem to contend that there is a positive correlation between rowing strength and pressing potential. While horizontal pulls and presses are both integral...

Straight arm vs bent arm side lateral raise?

Straight arm I've heard is more strain on your wrist etc and uses less weight, where as bent arm reduces strain but you can use more weight. But people are saying bending the arm is only shortening the lever basically just making the weight lighter by doing so. Is this true or is there any more...

Why don't I feel bench press in chest?

I use a flat bench with dumbells because it's the only equipment I have access to right now. When I do bench presses though I feel it way more in my triceps than my chest.

Kettlebell Swings For Ab Work On A Lower Body Day...

Would kettlebell swings be a good movement at the end of a lower body day on an upper/lower split for supersetting as an ab movement with calves? I've been doing ab rollouts with an ab wheel on those days, but thought of maybe adding kettlebell swings instead as a finisher, or would it be too...

Not Motivated to Squat Anymore

Normal to have lower back tightness during kettlebell swings?

I'm doing the 10k kettlebell swing challenge and I've done 2500 so far. Is it normal to feel some lower back tightness? For me it creeps in halfway through a workout, other than that it feels fine between workouts. I just want to make sure I'm not at risk of injury.
