Sticky Thread Sticky: The Bench Form Thread

We see a lot of threads asking for bench form critiques on this forum. I feel like most of these threads are made because people don’t know how to critique their own form. They just don’t know what to look for. I’m hoping to narrow that gap with this thread. I’m not going to touch on everything,...

Calling anyone interested in a friendly strength competition for this spring/summer

Deadlift hip drop?

Why is it that I see guys drop their hips a moment before a heavy pull? For me that takes the load entirely off my hamstrings and makes me want to squat. Hi everyone. I can't seem to progress on pushups beyond a very basic level, it just doesn't seem to improve. I can work up to sets of about 10 but if there's a disruption; illness, overdoing it, vacation, etc, it's like I have to start over and I struggle to do 5 reps. Normally I do 3-5 sets...

OHP as Bench Replacement?

This is something I hear from time to time: that a wholistic triad of barbell lifts would be better served with OHP, squat and deadlift, rather than bench, squat and deadlift. In some sports programs, apparently this is actually what coaches prescribe for their athletes and use to count for a...

Does it exist? Question about rack pulls and deadlifts

How hard/common is a 1.7xbw bench?

I’m weighing in at ~168lb and my PR is 280lb (from 2-3 months ago) and I’m on the Verge of hitting 290lb and should be able to within the next 4 weeks. So I’m around 1.7xbw on the bench. Honestly, how hard is that? I’ve never actually been to a gym or have ever competed so I don’t know. I’ve...

What do you think about decline bench ?

Been doing decline bench as a main movement for my chest the last couple of weeks and I really like it. The form feels easier I’d say and I can go significantly heavier. I hit 250x5 my last workout my best flat bench for reference was 270x1 or 250x2. The initial reason I started doing this was...

Has my deadlift form improved or do I still need to improve it?

I've been practicing romanian deadlifts and it has taught me to move my hips back. So the question is do I still need to improve my conventional deadlift? The reason I'm posting this is because I haven't had any good luck finding any good coaches to coach me, either they were too costly or they...

How important is warmup for hypertrophy?

Do you always warm up? Sure it helps prevent injury, but they say we also lift heavier when warm, and lifting heavier is key to hypertrophy. I guess I'm not alone in rarely warming up. But I know it would be helpful. But not to what extent.

Still can’t straighten lower back when deadlifting

Hi all I posted a video of my deadlift form a while back (can’t find the thread) because I could not for the life of me get my lower back straight when deadlifting. I was told it wasn’t too bad, it might be my natural curve and as long as I didn’t get any lower back pain it would be fine. Now...
