barbell calf raise tips?

No access to machines so have to make do with what i have. I find that I expend a lot of energy just trying to balance myself. I do them on 2 25lb plates and really try and stand on my big toe. Any other tips for maximum contraction? Or any other variations I can do with a barbell.
