All about equipment and iron!

Sticky Thread Sticky: The Official Power Rack Thread - August 2010 version

This is a collaborative effort from the equipment forum members. The 2008 edition has a lot of broken links and rather than keep that one going we decided to start a new one. First let’s have a few definitions to clear up some confusion. Squat Stands: These are probably the most useless...

Sticky Thread Sticky: The Cheapo Setup

Ok so let's go through the cheapest options for new equipment that you'd be willing to use for training. While we all dream of buying that custom built rig, or finding a solid piece of used commercial or vintage equipment to outfit your gym, many times we just want to buy something that's usable...

Post Sticky Thread Sticky: Barbells - Everything you ever wanted to know

I don't think a thread like this exists for the barbell, so I wanted to start one. The Olympic barbell is one of the most important purchases one can make for their home gym. A barbell is the interface to the weight and although they may all look similar to an untrained eye, there are actually a...

Cheap box squat options

I want to implement box squat in my training, but I don't want to pay for a real squat seat. I have limited space, so a massive diy box is not the best option. I saw and heard about people using a valve box available at home depot (example:Orbit 12 in. Standard Extension Valve Box). Are...

Powerblocks a good choice?

I think all I'll need is the set of 50lb dumbells that are adjustable. I heard its not too bulky, and the price is reasonable. After I surpass 50lb for each would it be better off getting a barbell? Once you add the 90lb expansion the thing starts looking really bulky, seems like it will get in the...

45 Degree Back Hyperextension question

I’ve been considering buying a 45 degree back hyperextension and was wondering if there’s any difference between models that have a foot roller and those with a lip that extends from the foot plate in terms of comfort and feel/effectiveness when doing back raises?

I am looking to add some new squat variations to the rotation and figured it could be a possibility. Is it different enough from normal high bar and front squats to justify its purchase?

Hi All, I read a post a few weeks ago in which SnowOne and DonForeman suggested a vintage iron thread to discuss/identify old plates. York Barbell Cast Plates

Anyone know how well these fit, thinking of adding some Cast Plates to my lineup. Got some Body Solid ones a while back and returned them as the opening were all 2 3/8” so were super sloppy on the bar. Currently using some Bumpers but need more plates. Nothing locally to grab cheap.

Weight scales that are accurate for high weight, 300+ lbs folks?

God only knows if I'm going to stick with it or not, but if I'm going to have an hope of sticking with a diet, I'm going to need scales that I feel I can put some actual confidence in. As of now, they're still in stock if you're in the market for another bar. Just picked up another one...I don't see the bare steel ones hit the boneyard very often. My first boneyard bar arrived and I couldn't spot the flaw, so hopefully I get as lucky on this one.

No spotter... difference between a power rack & regular squat/bench rack?

I can't post photos or links, so I'll try to describe as best as possible. The ideal setup (what has been recommended to me) is a "Power Rack, with lat-pull down/low cable row extension" But I have low ceilings and a small amount of space), it might be doable, but VERY tight and not really...
