Sticky Thread Sticky: About becoming a personal trainer

I get a lot of messages and questions from would-be and new trainers, and most dedicated gym-goers have at some point wondered about becoming a PT, so this goes out to them. Any questions or comments, fire away. Sr9FXdWc9l8

Sticky Thread Sticky: [new PTs] Wage, percentage and rental

Attached is a rental contract from Goodlife here in Australia . The rest we can't see as the interviewing manager (illegally) wouldn't let the potential "employee" take the rest with them to examine at home (or even worse, let a lawyer see it) and shredded it in front of them. You can see why...

UK. Are personal trainers seen as slave labour as cleaners and lackeys by gyms?

I have been looking at jobs in gyms as a recently qualified L3 PT. I cant find any, not one that offers a salaried position. As a PT you are expected to be a cleaner wiping down equipment half the day, running classes and put weights back and do inductions...but not get paid, oh and be aware of...

What is the hardest area on the body for you to teach on how to train?

For some reason for me, it's the abdominals. I give cues like curl the pelvis under and leave it there, put your feet up higher on the ball, breathe out when going, etc. Anytime I give a cue, they never due it. They wonder why their back hurts, so I explain, aaaaaaaaand they keep doing the same...

Post NASM help

Hello. So I'm taking the NASM PT course (in UK), I finished all the theory exams and what I have left is the OPT 12 week predictive programming for level 3, where I'm a bit stuck. The material was good until this part, where little is explained, both in reading and online lectures. Now for some it...

Eat your vegies

Too many trainers focus on macronutrient ratios and timing and blah blah, when some more very basic things are missed - are they eating any fruit and vegies? If you get a 40yo accountant or 35yo soccer mum, both of whom are overweight with back pain, is their issue really that they're having 110g...

Post experience sharing:advice about Fat loss over 40,bear reading

Fat loss over 40? Possible? DAMN RIGHT IT IS. And oh so lovely Brenda is a great example of that. WAY too many times in my career I’ve seen people simply fall into acceptance when it comes to body change that can occur after 40. Suddenly how we were eating and exercising (or not) isn’t...

Ditch gym and personal trainer?

Hi. Just a quick question, I won't take up much time. I've been working with a Personal Trainer for the last few months. I've had great results, lost about 40 pounds. I really enjoy her company and I like working with her. I also appreciate her encouragement and drive to push me and kick when I...

Lightbulb Personal Trainer - Gym Space

Becoming a personal trainer

Couple questions: I'm in Canada, what certification should I get to be able to work in a gym? My mother is a trainer and she is suggesting Canfit or YMCA, but I've read that it is better to get legit certifications. Tips to find work at a gym. What do they look for? I see a lot of turn over...

How hard will it be to make commission from this PT job?

For a friend, I can't really comment as I don't have much experience in the sales field of PT. He's been offered a 'Personal Training' role in Abu Dhabi. Home of the richest parts of the world where people go for money but he's been offered a flat salary of 3000AED (£700 GBP, or around $850) not...

quality vs quantity

Everyone wants to grow their business. This means diversifying what you offer. You'll never get 500 people in one place all squatting, pressing and deadlifting. Or just doing kettlebells, or whatever particular tool or method you think is most useful. But there's a limit to how far you should...

What is a good meal plan for trying to build muscle?

For most people, the intersection of ease, price, and taste makes brown rice, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal the go-to muscle-building core foods. Every day for as long as you want to build or maintain muscle, you must eat enough to reach your calorie target.

1 on 1 Personal Training sessions vs Small Group classes

I have a friend with a Starting Strength gym located in a strip mall in a fairly dense suburb of a major city (Dallas, TX) and his set up is 100% small group classes. His turnover rate is fairly brisk, but he caters to a market of mostly older white males, so it works for him in the location that...
