Sticky Thread Sticky: DON'T LOOK PAST the BASICS

From what I've been reading in this forum for the past several years---and it's getting worse, not better---most posters here are, for some reason, missing the basics of fat loss, and instead, are looking for some magic bullet, or worse, putting their faith in some TV or youtube guru, or some...

A mess of a man - M(48) 230 - 1lb a week….

Grew up thin, ballooned out in my 20's. Mostly due to a penchant for gluttony, sloth, addiction to food and general sleepiness. Hey, I'm a writer so I can be forgiven for sleeping all day and trying to party all night? (sigh) Suppose the plague has given us all time to do things we might not...

Activity level when finding maintenance calories?

So I've heard that to build muscle while losing fat you gotta enter into a 5-20% deficit (100-500 calories) I've calculated my maintenance cals using the tdee calculator website when I entered that I was sedentary and it was 1850 calories. When I entered that I did light exercise 1-2 days a...

Actually seeing results for the first time

Hello everyone, I'm cutting down from 258.71lb (117.35 in Australian) and my goal is 209.5lb (96) before I start to bulk up. BF% is about 33.7 based on the online us calculator, waist is 120cm at navel and 114 at the hips. Apart from cardio I'm not lifting yet, but am looking forward to it. I want...

Adaptive TDEE Calculation based on weight and calories logs

Hey everyone - I hope this is allowed as I didn't see anything against it in the rules. I'm a long time lurker of this forum and have used it for a lot and hope that this can be a way to give back a little bit. I think most people on here know that pretty much all TDEE calculators online work by...

Question Advice for Overcoming a Plateau?

Hi all! Little backstory - I'm 23F, 5'2", and went from 150 lbs, 35% body fat to my current weight of 127 lbs, 23% body fat. The majority of the weight loss occurred within the last 14 weeks, where I went from 135 to 127. I went from 150-135 by yoyo-ing and not really being consistent with any...

Advice on bulking/cutting

I’m 6’ 4” 215 lbs 23 years old. I’ve been lifting for about 8 months now but I was focused heavily on cardio to shed some fat (lost 20 pounds). I regularly ride a peloton bike and it’s kept me in great shape (compared to where I was before) but I definitely need to put on muscle. I’m kind of in a...

Before I continue my full-year diet

Before I start, I had a cheat week because of family visit, I just feel like fasting for two or three days and then I will continue to diet healthily. Big whoosh at the onset of maintenance - hormones?

Twice in a row now, as soon as I switch from ~12 weeks of consecutive calorie deficit (over 500 daily) to a maintenance phase to drop diet fatigue, I lose 2-3 lbs as soon as I increase calories. This weight stays off the entire duration of the 6-8 week maintenance phase. Common sense would have...

Bulk, Cut, Maintain, Recomp?

Hi, Wondering what I should? Want to build more muscle mass but worried I’ll get too fat. A bit of body fat doesn’t bother me, I’m happy enough with it atm and can live with it aslong as I’m gaining muscle. Should I just go for a lean bulk and cut later when I’ve built more muscle or maybe...

Change in weight but no change in waistline

I have only just started cutting. Immediate water weight, glycogen loss, etc. was worth circa 5lbs. Adjusted post-start weight was 181.1 lbs, and I am now down to 178.9 lbs. Neck size is basically the same, which is good. Waistline however is the same at about 34 inches. I am not measuring other...

Does fasting cause muscle loss?

I usually have one meal a day because I enjoy having one large meal in one sitting than splitting them at different times. It’s more filling. If I’m in a surplus at the end of the day, and I’m fasting for 23 hours, would my body start breaking down my muscle if I start feeling hungry? Would...

Efficacy of occasional all-day fasts

Hi. I am going to start tracking calories more and placing less value on exercise, as I find it is easy to over-estimate your caloric expenditure through exercise. So, RMR + a conservative allowance for exercise makes sense, before focusing predominantly on caloric intake (obvious stuff). I was...
