Where is the line between reasonable and unreasonable deficit?

It seems that 500 cal daily deficit hits that 3500 1 lb of fat metric, but can you assume 1k cal deficit is 2 lbs and is that unhealthy? What about 1,500? I am sure the answer is person dependent, but are there some general rules that most experts agree on?
