jumping backwards vs straight up

I noticed that weightlifters appear to jump diagonally backwards instead of straight up in the air. As a beginner, should I start practicing this? Or is this only for advanced lifters?

The cling or the jerk

I always find it harder the do the jerk but i was just wondering if anyone had it the other way. I was also wondering what were some good exercises that could help me improve my jerk.

how to determine snatch grip?

I'm not sure what the optimal snatch grip width is for me.... currently I am playing around 110cm apart measured from the outside edges of my index fingers. (I'm 5'6 with normal proportions...i think :p)

'Old school' vs. 'New school' training methods

Back in the day, guys used to train 3-4 times a week, once a day. We are talking Olympic champions, not just 'ordinary' lifters. They also wouldn't go to a true maximum very often, usually preferring to save those extra kilograms for the platform in competition. They would still squat, do overheads...

As i've stated in another topic, I'm pretty new to weightlifting but enjoying it a lot and really wanting to progress asap. I need some advice on how to improve my hip flexbility for ease of going atg without toppling over, and also increasing shoulder flexibility for snatch and cnj. Thanks
