When you catch a clean, should your thumb

Be under or over the bar? I found myself cleaning and catching with the thumb under, as in position to do an a press or a jerk with a suicide grip, and when catching and dropping into a front squat it feels much more natural to catch with the thumb under the bar and not over. Is it different...

Angry Can't get under the bar fast enough on squat cleans

And I end up looking like this: Elbows aren't rotated far enough under the bar, wrist says "oww!", and I drop the bar for safety. Suggestions?
