Largest deficit before muscle loss shown in studies?

A 500 calorie deficit seems to be the highest i see recommended, is there any reason for this number? Has it been shown in studies that more than a 500 calorie deficit = muscle loss? i see people doing diets such as PSMF and claim no loss of muscle etc, What do the actually studies show?
