Thumbs up Sticky Thread Sticky: This week in the O35 II

On this day BLK00TJ is competing at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic State Championships and Military Nationals. I've competed alongside this lifter and his squat is nothing short of elite. Yesterday I had a few surprise PR's in the gym (sorry no pics or vids) Barbell Bench 265 x 6, Dumbells 110's x 9,...

Anyone dealt with "runner's knee" or patellofemoral knee pain?

Both of my knees are now dealing with this, and there currently is no leg exercise I can do without pain once I start increasing the weight. I can do mild to moderate weight on leg extensions and incline leg presses, but once I go beyond, say, a 4 on a scale of 10, my knee pain begins. I've seen...

Lost 100lbs - is this loose skin or fat?

I had been obese till 26, when I finally got my act together and started losing weight through exclusively cardio and diet. Fast forward nine years later, and I’m 143 pounds with a BMI of 20.6 (down from 34.7). Unfortunately, my stomach and manboobs aren’t quite where I want them to be. I took...

Angry Thoughts and Prayers for me Brahs (Lower Back)

So I've been hitting the weights hard since '88 and have had many, many great years in the gym with some breaks here and there for medical issues. But over the past 5 years I've encountered an increasing frequency of injuries to my lower back, despite a massive increase in pre-workout stretching...

Frequency

We all read especially for "natural" lifters that frequency is key for gaining muscle. We can read training advice online or in magazines until we are blue in the face, but what it really comes down to is what works for you. Frequency was not working for me. I was on a push/pull/legs routine...

The Bench Press

Last set for 185lbs x 6. The barbell bench press gets a back rap today in the fitness world, in fact most workout advice in today's world is horrible. You need to really shift through the sands to find some sound advice. Or to make it easier just only read about old school bodybuilding. I’m...

Anyone ever beat this without surgery? Been a year now and can't crack the code on getting rid of biceps tendonitis in shoulder. Done: -SMR (ball/roller) -dry needling -scapular mobilization -serratus anterior strengthening

Creatine in preworkout drink enough?

I've been using a preworkout drink (cellucor c4 sport) and it has micronized creatine in the blend but not exactly how much. The blend is 4.9 grams but there are 8 things included in that. Is this sufficient considering I'm taking it 5-6 days a week or should I consider additional creatine if I...

Row machines

Like a lot of people I've been adding to the home gym. I've just picked up an elliptical (ProForm Hybrid Trainer) and they also have a row machine that is in stock. I've never used a row machine, is there any benefit to it out side of aerobics? Can you use them for tricep pulls and the like? I...

Muscle building or strength training or both for thin person over 40 years old ?

Hi, I am in my 40s. Thin since young and did alot of cardio when I was young. Now I am underweight and super thin. At my age, I believe I have to focus more on strength and to bulk up as I read somewhere that it is dangerous to be thin and underweight as you grow older. Buy my question now is,...

Is it even worth it?

Sorry if this post comes across as a debbie downer. I'm 37 years old. I'm 6'5 220 lbs. A year ago I was 240 lbs. I wasn't happy with how I looked, so I joined a gym, hired a personal trainer, starting eating right, etc. I was lifting 5 times a week. I lost 35 lbs and got down to 205, I...

Strange issue with pecs spasming and cramping

I am 35 y/o and have been a serious lifter for 20 years. Last year at 34 was the strongest I've ever been in my life. I was routinely benching 225 for 20+ reps and had never felt better. Anyways I had to take 3 weeks off last September and a few weeks back into it I started getting cramps on...

Goodbye 747s

747s have flown a lot of miles since the launch in 1969, but they are being phased out slowly by airlines (mostly since twin engine planes for so much better and longer range and are cheaper to operate) The final 2 operated by British Airways are both in the air on their final flights as I type.

Continue bulking?

6’2 182. Starting to get very jiggly/watery back handles. Was much leaner at 187 before Covid struck. Not sure what happened, most likely a loss of LBM. Just curious where I will end up if I try to add another 10-15 pounds over the next 6 months. BF estimate would also be appreciated.

Hello again. Just starting back.

It's pretty much been 8yrs. since I trained with any consistency, starting back at 44 now. Last couple years I've been eating like crap, lots of fast food and beer. Finally got tired of feeling tired every day and hungover pretty much every Saturday. Started cleaning up my diet bigtime and...

The Dumbell vs Barbell debate

I was at the gym and a trainer made a comment that I should stop doing dumbbells and focus on heavy barbell instead. Now if I was training as a power lifter I might agree. When I questioned him on it he literally said " I train the CEO of Nike, I made a quater million dollars last year, when I give...

For those who got snipped - how long recovery?

I'm taking the bullets out of the gun late next month. I'm assuming a full week off with no major activity whatsoever is key. It will be a month out from a GORUCK endurance event I have planned though - think carrying backpacks over long distances, CrossFit-style workouts, and carrying heavy...

Frustrated with fat loss.. keep gaining weight .. 275lbs (pic included)

40yo male. So according to 275x14-500 (weight loss) I should be able to consume 3350 calories a day and lose weight. I've been exercising regularly for 3 years with a split of full body compound lifting and cardio. I don't track my calories and I definitely like to have drinks with my...

8-Week Intensity/Volume Experiment

While recently listening to an older Pavel podcast, I heard him say how most of the time Russian lifters are using 1/3 to 2/3 of their max reps. So even if they could lift a particular weight 9 times, most of the time they're only lifting it 3-6 times. I almost always lift one set to near failure...

Hi, I've been lifting seriously ( well consistently at least ) for about a year and a half the more I read the more confused I am about my program. I wanted to share my progress and get people's thoughts. For the first year I was pretty much doing a squat, bench, deadlift and pullup workout 3...

Quad sweep

Extensions with toes pointing in, walking lunges with weight, high rep squats. Nothing seems to bring out that sweep. My upper legs are severely lacking. Hopefully this can’t be a genetic factor? 18.5” femur for the win lol. Any tips on getting the outers to come in would be greatly appreciated.

UK gyms reopen maybe July?

No date but rumour is gyms in UK reopen July if all is well. The uk's trade association for gyms ukactive has guidance which is fairly vague https://www.ukactive.com/covid-19 but does have specific things such as workout towels banned, 3m squared per person and obvious things about cleaning....
