Thumbs up Sticky Thread Sticky: This week in the O35 II

On this day BLK00TJ is competing at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic State Championships and Military Nationals. I've competed alongside this lifter and his squat is nothing short of elite. Yesterday I had a few surprise PR's in the gym (sorry no pics or vids) Barbell Bench 265 x 6, Dumbells 110's x 9,...

Arrow Sticky Thread Sticky: The Official Ov35 Bench Press Thread!

May as well throw this one out there so we have all 3 major lifts represented. :) Open to ideas as to how things should run but here's how I see it..... - must be Flat BB Bench only (using an OLY bar). No Incline Bench, Decline Bench or DBs. - Raw lifts only. No shirted benching. (wrist...

New year, new routine, back in the gym

Happy new year to you all. I'm an old-timer who has been here since 2008 or 2009 and have been on and off the website. I've done 5x5, p90x, and other routines. I had a child 1 year ago and due to family responsibilities as well as two back injuries (March 2017 and October 2018), I didn't work...

Anyone else making MAJOR changes to their training inthe new year?

For the last nearly 5 years I have woke up around 3:30am to train at 5am before work. This usually netted me an average of 5-6.5 hours of actual sleep per night. This was mostly to prioritize my training while not impacting time with my family, also my old gym was an absolute zoo after work. Last...

Deadlifting for hypertrophy.

Just curious what's your go to routine for deadlifts for reps. More for hypertrophy than max weight. 4 x 8? 5 x 5? etc.

Overcoming adrenal fatigue

I was just diagnosed with borderline severe adrenal fatigue/dysfunction. My cortisol is rock bottom. I have had many symptoms over the last 6 months, but the doc was chalking it up to low thyroid, which I also have. I don't want to have to take another prescription, so I am looking for alternatives...

A very strange knee pain - feels like it's exterior, on the skin's surface but isn't

I did some searches on this and found what seems like hundreds of other people complaining about this exact same symptom and doctors not being able to figure it out. What has been happening to me for the past month is it feels like I have a bruise, cut or splinter just below my knee cap. It gets...

Pain/tearing feeling in abdomen during heavy squats

Ive been doing Rippetoes Starting Strength for about 4 weeks and am at the most weight (150lbs) Ive ever done on the squat. Im 44, male, have always been thin at 6'1" and 165lbs, and in good shape. The past two times Ive felt what I can only describe as something tearing/bursting inside my...

Anyone else have no idea what their max weight is for a single rep?

I don't know if it's because I'm older, but I've been hitting the gym regularly for 3 months now, increasing my weight every 4-5 weeks, and I've yet to have the urge to see what I can bench/squat/deadlift in a single rep. Is it normal not to care?

Cord cutting alternatives to Netflix?

I'd cut cable ties many years back and feel pretty good about that. Don't really watch network TV or TV in general, but the kids sometimes watch some BS on Netflix. The problem is, more and more, Netflix is getting just a little bit too "woke". I don't need my 5 year old being recommended to...

Getting shirts for suit

I'm 6 foot, 12.5 stone, about 13% bf with fairly broad shoulders. Just looking to get some new shirts for work and looking for suggestions as to where in the UK to get shirts that fit well other than the standard "dad bod" fit. Any suggestions?

Question Now that I am over 35, what should I stop doing?

Nobody told me to stop playing basketball, and I ruptured my Achilles like a pro! In my post rupture research I noticed that this is a somewhat common injury for active men in their 30s and 40s. Had I know the risks, I probably would’ve worn different shoes. Maybe I wouldn’t have played that...

Novice advice wanted just starting out very overweight

I'm 37 and 21st (294ibs) mostly fat... Never worked out. Inactive too. I decided to shape up. I want to build fairly big chest, big arms, not massive but so it's obvious I've worked out. I want to get rid of the fat of course too. Build muscles on stomach too otherwise my skin will...

Not doing cardio

Hi Everyone I read different opnion and school of thought regarding lifting weights vs cardio. I am lifting weights only and some say this causes stiffness in the arteries which then mean more cardio risks. How true is this and any research out there

Left arm pain before I start my routine

I'm 45, have not lifted in over a decade. I just got my home GYM all squared away and will start lifting this week. I have had a nagging pain in my left forearm for about 8-9 months, not sure what has caused the injury. I own a bunch of land and in the spring/summer/fall do quite a bit of...

Higher reps

So seeing a recent interview today with Flex Wheeler, he was saying he wish he did higher reps than messing with heavy weights during his competing days. He is claiming you can still get mass with lighter weight and higher reps. I have noticed lately that the higher reps is gaining some...

Dad gut

Hey guys. So I’ve finally started my journey with weightlifting for health and strength. When younger I was always lean even without exercising. But I’ve been struck with a dad gut now. I have no flappy fat anywhere. I’m still pretty lean but my gut has started pretuting. It just looks like a...

Box jumps?

Anybody add these on off days? My gym remodeled and now has the nice variable height boxes. Can't say I've left the ground in 5 years or so, so I kept it low today. Did 2x5 at 30 and 2x5 at 36. I'd like to do once or twice a week as a squat accessory. Would like to hear if anyone has had success...

How is my progress looking?

I wouldn't normally post photos since I don't particularly like the way I look, but I'm eager for some feedback. I've posted pictures in my Body Space. I started lifting in August last year at 38 years of age. First few weeks I ate too little and did too much cardio, but eventually I settled...

Holy hell I’ll be 50

Well it was inevitable, the clock keep turning. Tomorrow I will tip the half century mark. Over the past 7 months I have been working to be in better shape at 50 than I was at 30. I missed my target weight by 7 pounds but I’m back in a 30” waist, not bad for 50... 16% body fat. I would like...
