Thumbs up Sticky Thread Sticky: This week in the O35 II

On this day BLK00TJ is competing at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic State Championships and Military Nationals. I've competed alongside this lifter and his squat is nothing short of elite. Yesterday I had a few surprise PR's in the gym (sorry no pics or vids) Barbell Bench 265 x 6, Dumbells 110's x 9,...

When happens when you stop weight training?

Hey guys, I'm 26yo and planning to start weight training in 3 months or so, however I'm somewhat worried what will happen when I'll stop (lets face it, this day will come). I was wondering, what happens if at 35 if I stop exercising altogether? Assume that body fat is fairly low, and there...

When do I need a belt or straps?

I’m 45 been lifting a year and trying to get up to 2x body weight for 5 x3 or 4. I’m up to 330lbs and need to get to 375. I really didn’t want to get a belt or straps because I want to increase my grip and I’m keen on strengthening my back. Is there a point where you need to get a belt. My...

Cannot increase my 1RM on 5/3/1 before I need to cut again.

Sorry for the long post. I’m struggling here with how I should proceed. I am 40 years old & just under 5’8” tall. I have an extremely small frame with wrists measuring just 6” circumference. I currently weigh in at just under 130lb which does sound really light but if you look at my avi I don’t...

Being athletic or just having the outer shell for looks?

This observation I guess continues from a young age to an older guy. That one guy who looks amazing, but has not one athletic ability in his bone. I grew up playing sports, doing stuff, surfing, skimboarding, skateboarding, etc. Tossing the pig iron was always there but not a priority or an...

Higher volume training for us older dudes?

I've heard that as you get older, training with lighter intensity for more volume can be beneficial as it allows similar gains/hypertrophy but with less stress on your body? I'm 39 halfway to 40...after lifting since my 20s, I've got some kinks here and there like anyone. Thinking of adopting...

Blood Pressure

I have been dealing with elevated blood pressure for a while now, but last week I went to donate blood and the nurse took my BP and it registered at 180/110, so I am going to go seem my GP tomorrow and most likely get put on medication before something explodes. Anyone on BP meds? At first I was...

Angry Age 33. Status: Tour Over for strength gains & muscle gains.

I feel like it's over to be honest. I go to failure, I work out 3 times a week, I am hepped up on pre workout And I still can't even push one rep more than last week or the week before and hell all it takes is one missed meal and a bad sleep and I can be down 10-15% on my lifts. Age 33,...

To hire PT or not?

Hi, I need second opinion hiring a PT to motivate me and most importantly someone to make sure that I'm squatting and deadlifting with good technique. I'm currently in VIetnam and my currently gym is offering me 50 sessions with PT at $1100. I've been training consitently for 2 years and can...

Hello!

Hi everyone. I've been a regular lurker on this site for roughly a year now and I just wanted to post and thank you all for your contributions to the site. The majority of these forums (and many lifting websites in general) really seems to skew towards oneupmanship and a general toxic vibe, but...

I've actually made some gains! but for what at this age?

I made a post way back in 2005, complaining a bit and probably asking for advice. Everything in that post has remained true for the following 15 years up until the past few months. But somehow I've finally made gains. At 47 years old, I've finally made a real and noticeable gain. One of the replies...

Chia Seeds

I recently heard about a plant called Chia. I think it is interesting to everyone. From what I've read this is really great plant with wonderful features. For example: Chia Seeds help suppress the appetite, and contribute to drain toxins from the body. Chia seeds are rich in omega 3, protein and...

Using The Rack For Too Long

Is there a gym etiquette for using the rack for too long? Note that I am active and present the entire time I am using the rack. I don't use my phone, and spend 1 or 2 minutes at most resting between sets. My gym (Anytime Fitness) has two racks. I don't often see a line up, and there are some...

Program question

Long time lurker first time posting. 37 years old 6’3” 223 lbs down from 295 lbs. Currently losing 1-1.5 lbs per week. I started lifting again in June of 18 on Allpro. I switched in March of this year to Fierce 5. My lifts are progressing but I am starting to fail more frequently. After...

Why I Workout At Home

I will be 52 years-old in a few weeks and the endorphins/testosterone or whatever released during lifting along with the music blaring in my headphones makes me feel like a teenager! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_nJHYPSbo

Don't eat enough?

Extreme ectomorph. After 10 years of work out am still very skinny. Noticed that I need to eat maybe about 3000 calories if not more if I want to make serious gains. Problem is I get full too easy? I did eat 10 eggs yeaterday but I noticed that even those dont provide all protien and calorites...

Pondering (MEV) Minimum Effective Volume

I've come across the concept of Minimum Effective Volume from Mike Israetel recently. I've been out of it for over 10 years and just started working out again 18 weeks ago. I've started with 10 sets for chest/back and 8 sets for biceps/triceps and was planning to add a set every 4 weeks to see...

Is forearm/wrist/elbow pain normal?

I feel like the muscles can easily recover and handle more, but the soft tissue like tendons flare up, especially around inner elbow/forearm area. It's mainly my left arm. It tends to feel better after deload but gets progressively worse over a few weeks until it tells me I better deload again....

When can I realistically expect visible results?

Hi everyone! I’m 41 and the reason I ask this question is that whilst I trained a lot in my 20’s (was super fit my entire 20’s), a little in my early 30’s, but absolutely no weight training since my second child was born 8 years ago (trained until I was 8 weeks pregnant with her then stopped when I...

T-Bar Rows.

My workout area is only 12' x 8' but can do some many quality exercises within this space. I'm all about the old school, less is better without the fancy machines. Its that time of year, 25 degrees in the the garage this morning, no heat in winter, no AC in the summer, wouldn't change it,...

Frustration

I am going to rant a minute here. I really suck at sustained weight loss. I understand the concepts, macros, weighing food, tracking calories, deficit targets- and I can put them in place, but I constantly sabotage myself. Its driving me nuts. I am stronger than I have ever been (at least on...
