Abs cramping when doing direct ab work.

IDK what in Hades is going on but my abs cramp when I'm doing direct ab work. It's like a Charley Horse that will not let go and I have to stop after only a few sets. Doesn't matter if it's crunches or oblique work. Any idea what could be causing this?
