On this day BLK00TJ is competing at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic State Championships and Military Nationals. I've competed alongside this lifter and his squat is nothing short of elite. Yesterday I had a few surprise PR's in the gym (sorry no pics or vids) Barbell Bench 265 x 6, Dumbells 110's x 9,...

Eating for hypertrophy vs. longevity

I'm wondering if any members of this forum have put any thought into this. It is particularly relevant for those of us in our 30s and beyond. Note that I am not an expert in the nutrition and longevity field. My knowledge comes from listening to interviews with experts on Joe Rogan, Ronda Patrick's...

Sleeping and recovery

So sleeping is vital for muscle building and so, and people recommend around 6-8h per day. But does this mean straight sleep (like, going to bed at 11pm and waking up at 7 am). Or, as long as you can manage those hours of sleep into your day it's all good? Because I know about those REM,...

The Squat.

Working on the chicken legs. I've never had big legs, they are long and athletic though. I have achieved squatting weight now at 48 that I could even touch in my 20's, so getting older doesn't mean backtracking at times. I have never been strong at squatting so hitting this mark is big for...

Cutting during an injury?

My forearm on my dominant arm has been acting up during rows and most other pulls so for the past 3 weeks I've neglected all pulling movements. I thought it would be fine in a week or 2, now I wonder if it'll be fine at all. It has improved somewhat but even during standing ab wheel the forearm...

Creatine HCL works

I got back into a good routine for about 1 year now, I've been doing the Viking split routine. But only in the last month have I started taking Creatine HCL and only 2 grams a day. It doesn't taste the best but I've seen a big difference with my strength in the gym. Don't laugh at these stats...

Getting started at 45

Hey guys. Long story short, battled cancer twice, won and in remission. Grew sick and tired of always feeling sick and tired, so decided to turn over a new leaf. Started in the fall with some strength training because I was so weak (my very first bench press was 60 lbs for 5 reps!). Got my form...

Question rotator cuff inj

I had been having shoulder pain and periodic immobility for about 10 years. I had seen different VA doctors, X-Rays, CT scans, MRI's all showing negative except for 2 bone spurs. I finally got a good VA ortho who said I can have up to 3 shots to see if it helps, if not then I will have to choose...

5 x 5 versus German Volume Training

Hi all, I would appreciate your feedback on this. Aside from the difference in rep/set schemes, what are the other differences between doing a 5 x 5 workout program and GVT (i.e. purpose, goals, outcome/results of each workout protocol)? I would assume 5 x 5 training aims for heavier...

Lat Machine for home gym?

I have an opportunity to buy a Lat Machine by Body Solid for $200. I kind of feel a lat machine is a waste for a home gym. It's a space eater and these machines seems to bounce around, though the seller claims is solid as a rock. If you can pullups you're golden.

AM vs PM workouts

I'm already aware this is a personal preference choice, got that. This isn't looking for "I have to work-out in the AM because of work, kids, school" sort of thing. What I'm curious about is if anyone switched from one to the other, and saw any noticeable difference in the quality of their...

Bouldering?

Has anyone tried bouldering? It's indoor rock climbing that's done without the use of ropes or harnesses. A friend at work told me about one located near me, and my 18 year old son and I tried it today. Naively, I actually thought that every "hold" would be one that you could get at least 3-4...

Gaining strength, losing weight, being fitter etc!

I'm not sure if this is the right forum as I don't see myself as a bodybuilder but it looked like there was some good advice on here. I'm 36 Male and consider myself to be generally fit - I'm 14 stone but 6'3". I do a fair bit of exercise but with that comes a few problems which seem to be...

Cheating w/ knee wraps, belts and straps

It seems obvious to me that lifting without a belt will strengthen the core. It seems very likely that body strength will surpass my grip and my ability to deadlift heavy. My question is in regards to my knees. Will wrapping my knees for squats provide protection against knee injuries or will...
