One arm pushups are hurting my elbow

Hi all I’ve recently managed one arm pushups but after a couple of reps it’s making my elbow click so that it hurts to even do one Normal push-up. Clears up in a couple of days. But what could this be and how can I avoid it? Don’t want to be doing damage.
