to get the appropriate amount of protein but not calorie surplus to get mass? Or surplus is more important?

You won't gain weight. You'll probably look more defined, I did the same thing. Noticed more definition, ended up like losing a pound though. So caloric surplus still is important.

You need to have a calorie surplus and enough protein. Macronutrient balance is very important as well. I see some people with diets consisting of 70%+ protein... and they wonder why they dont have much energy, or arent making good gains.
