I've been trying to find some other carb sources and I tried barley. I absolutely love the flavour and texture. From what I can tell it's a good carb source but I wanted to see if anyone here had a reason to make me believe otherwise ;)

Here's what I 'know' about it:
Nutrition data for 1 cup pearled barley (www.nutritiondata.com) (leaving out 0's)
193 calories
total fat 1 g
sodium 5 mg
carbs 44 g
fibre 6 g
protein 4 g

Glycemic index (www.glycemicindex.com) 22 or 29
Glycemic load (same) 8 or 9.7

For comparison, brown rice's GI is between 50 and 87 (same source; they list different kinds of rice), and it's GL is between 23 and 38.

Looks like a pretty good carb source to me - so if no one has 'objections' I'm definitely recommending it to everyone. It needs to cook for a pretty long time (about the same as brown rice) but it's worth it.

I myself do not know anything about barley. How does it compare to steel cut oats? I am bulking so I am trying to eat a lot of carbs.

What brand did you use? I've been wanting to try it. I've seen Bob's Red Mill at my supermarket.
