Celebrity culture.

I was gonna say war... but that would be stupid because most of our advances have come from developments in warfare.

The same things that have advanced us have also hindered us. One example, technology is great, but the media has several negative affects on people and the way they think, live, act, etc...

Religion, a result of greed, power and corruption. Helped civilisation develop in it's infant stages, but is now causing more trouble than good, time to leave the primative state of idol worship and pagaen rituals and enter the age of science, morality and human equality.

It's greed. Greed and hubris.

Had the great empires of the past advanced technologically at the same rate they were, we may very well have colonies on Mars right now. But people get greedy, they get prideful, and they think they can never be toppled from their positions at the top. Of course, in the end, the barbarians always win, and civilisation takes a step backwards.

Our history has been that of 2 steps forward and one step back....

That same selfishness also prevents certain technologies and advancments from happening in order to increase profits for companies.

Stupid moral ethics are hindering human cloning a lot. People don't want to try human cloning for? All they have are stupid and pointless reasons.

Also political correctness is hindering the development of intelligence and knowledge in many fields. For example, some people claim races do not exist, while they obviously exist and differences between them can help understand diseases and cures better.

Perhaps, but the overwhelming amount of progress and technology brought about by selfishness far out weighs any that it prevents from coming about.
