My girlfriend's mom bought a bag of 80% lean hamburger meat, which I know isn't very lean, but do they make it any leaner? If so is it a healthy source of protein instead of chicken breasts?

The have 75%, 80-something, 90% and 93% at my grocery store (superfresh). Leaner beef is more expensive though.

Since nobody has said it:
You can get up to 93% lean ground beef in most stores.
Here in Lincoln, Nebraska..we got a local guy who made a special beef that is like 98% lean without weird chemicals, had to do with the cows diet.
Anyway, beef has one of the best amino profiles out there, and it tastes great. Higher quality protein than chicken, but when it comes to protein..complete is complete.

I live near Knoxville Tn, I go to Krogers. They sale Laura's Lean Beef. 96% fat free or they way it as 4% fat. Yes it is more expensive but it is also lean.

I am currently cutting and I eat 4 oz. of 93% lean ground beef every day. However, you can't eat as much lean ground beef on a cut as you can chicken because the fat content is a lot greater in beef than in chicken. On a bulk though, I would say you can eat all of the lean ground beef you want.

Look into Bison Meat, very very lean, and very good. It's a bit expensive, but IMO it's worth it.

Yummmmm, lean hamburger meat. Throw that stuff in a frying pan on medium heat, throw in some oregano, cook till brown, serve over some rice. Yummmmm.

At your age, don't worry about the lean %. JUST EAT!

Cooking tip:

Add some minced onions to your lean ground beef mix to keep the meat moist throughout cooking/eating.

yeah 80% is not lean man, get the 93 or 94 which is usually lean sirloin or ground sirloin. the 80% has like 28-30g fat per serving, with lots of saturated fat.

Just remember:

95% fat free = 95% fat free BY WEIGHT

NOT

95% fat free BY CALORIE

80% "lean" beef means about 70% calories from fat.
93% lean beef means about 50% calories from fat.
96% lean beef means about 40% calories from fat.

Skinless chicken breast = about 15% calories from fat.

Take your pick.

Of course on a bulk its not quite so important.

EDIT to say chicken was 15% not 5%. I missed the 1 off.
Alternatively you can buy the chicken tenderloin (the strip of breast meat that runs under then main breast muscle and against the sternum). This is 100% calories from Protein.

For the cheap bastards (like myself) you can buy the 80% ground beef, brown it in a pan, then use a strainer and spray it with hot water. Most of the fat cooks off and the rest is washed away. It is easy to do and cheaper than buying the 99.9875% fat free meat.
