So the rule of thumb is to consume 1 - 1.5 grams of protein per lbs of body weight. IS this based on total body weight or lean body mass. For example I weigh 270, should I really be consuming 270-405 grams of protein? If you take away my body fat (27%) I weigh 197. So should I be consuming 197-295 grams of protein?

fat doesn't need nutrients, so I believe its just for lean body mass. don't quote me though.

I just asked this question yesterday and the answer is that you use LBM (not total weight) to calculate the 1-1.5 grams of protein.
