First people to come to mind:

Ken Griffey JR - He had potential to be the greatest of all time but injuries messed him up

Vince Carter - Injuries messed him up, as well as not having heart.

Eric Lindros - Was supposed to be the next Lemieux

Grant Hill - Was hyped up to be the next Jordan

moss.......no consistant work ethic
david wells.....if he really wanted to, he coulda been an elite pitcher
ted williams, muhammad ali......both walked away from their sport at their very peaked and didnt return for 4 years in Williams case serving the army, and ali protesting the draft
antoine walker....he woulda never been great but he coulda been a consistant all star if he learned how to play the team game and know when to do what he does which isnt jackin up 3s....yes celtics fan

Everyone keeps saying Mike Tyson, but here's what I think; a fighter like Tyson is never gonna have a long career. They come up, have short blazing careers and soon disappear. Look at similar fighters; Joe Frazier, George Foreman(kinda), Rocky Marciano, etc. Such a fighter just can't last for a long time b/c they're not built for it. Could Tyson have had a few more years on top? Yes. As long as say Lewis or Holyfield? Nah

Eric Lindros - Was supposed to be the next Lemieux

Lindros being the next Lemieux?

How about Lemieux? He never lived up to his potential. Between cancer and multiple back injuries, he never got to maintain his peak for any period of time.

Michael Vick

Vick peaked. He was never that good to begin with. All body, no brains.

Can't be stupid and be a QB. Make no mistake, Vick was ****ing stupid.

Hines Ward, because except for the brief period with Tommy Maddox, he has been held bac by a run-heavy system. He is everything you would want in a WR: good hands, tough, good work ethic, willing to take a hit. I honestly thought at one time he was a top 3 receiver.

Warrick Dunn, because he's never really gotten a chance to be a feature back, yet still has put up 1000 yard seasons.

Ron Dayne, because he has never run the ball like the big, bruising back he's built to be. He got to the NFL and found out that those little tip-toe moves don't work as well for a 250-pound guy as when he was at Wisconsin.

Jake Plummer. Awesome at ASU, but never really materialized in the NFL.

Sam Okey

http://www2.jsonline.com/badger/20498/image/1029/okey1029.jpg

Only Big Ten player ever to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks....and he did it in his freshman year when he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He was a McDonalds All-American in highschool and practiced with the Dream Team to help them get ready for the Olympics. But feuds with his coaches, and getting caught with drugs and the lifestyle available to a popular athlete got in the way of him having a career in the NBA. Charles Barkley once said that Okey will, "Make one hell of a pro basketball player"....

And oh yea, hes from my hometown.

Grant Hill... there were only 3 players in NBA history to average 20 PPG, 5 RPG, and 5 APG their rookie years.. Those players were Oscar Robertson, Jordan, and Lebron James. Hill missed it by only scoring 19.9 PPG.

Then everything went downhill from there... after all the injuries.

Andy Roddick

I believe Andy Roddick has surpassed his potential actually. He has nothing but a big serve and a counterpunching game to back it up. His volleys suck, his transitional game is terrible, his forehand isn't half the shot it was back in '03, and he hits like 1 backhand winner every 3 matches on a lucky passing shot. He got lucky with the 1 major he did win because Federer was knocked out before the final. He does, however, have one of the best serves of all time so that can only get him so far.

If you wanna talk about wasted talent and potential in tennis, look no further than Marat Safin or David Nalbandian, 2 headcases with enormous talent, but not much to show for it.

Football wise, it's got to be Mike Williams out of USC. Anyone remember that guy? BEASTLY in college, but absolutely no progress in the NFL, even on a pass heavy team such as the Lions.

And what is up with all the hate on Junior? The Kid dominated the 1990's in baseball and was a MVP once. Yes, he got hurt and had a chance to be the Home Run King before he got hurt. He will still finish his career with over 600 plus homers. A lot of what if's come to my mind, but he still put up huge numbers when he was healthy. I don't see that being bad at all and he will be a first ballot H.O.F'er.

I know that, like I said a lot "what if's" and he was doomed once he went to Cincy. I guess I'm a bit of homer, because he is one of my favorite players!! I always make it a point to catch the Astros vs. Reds early in the year just in case he gets hurt.

Ok, some good people listed so far but I'm gonna go out on a limb here.

Two of the greatest RB's that played. Barry Sanders and Jim Brown. They both retired way way too soon. I think if they had played more they had potential to break Walter's old rushing record. Im not saying these guys were busts or anything like that, I think if they had just played some more seasons theyd be even more popular than they are.
