avoid russia, china and australia?

not sure what point you're trying to make, but i'm guessing some weak one between "socialist" systems of government and suicide rates.

The map wasn't between socialism and capitalism , it was the GDP nominal per capita silly  If I wanted to make a comparison between socialist governments and capitalist ones, I would have

well, russia, china, japan, australia, as well as some of the scandinavian countries, all with the highest suicide rates, are all either socialist or even communist.

but since you didn't provide any commentary, how would anyone know what your point was? you just threw a couple of links out there and said "discuss."

Communism and socialism are completely different. In practice, communism equals a dictatorship so why you're trying to make a correlation with socialism on that one is way beyond me.

Not everyone is trying as hard as you are to make progressive people look dumb so relax a little bit and just take it for what it's worth.

that would be 0, since there was no commentary. I can post random links from wiki, too, doesn't mean much without stating your point. :p and yes, i already realize that it's way beyond you.

You're still getting your ass kicked in this thread? I thought you were done and had learned your lesson after getting owned in the third post. But I guess you are a glutton for punishment. If you want to make yourself look like even more of an idiot, be my guest. :D

You need cultural context with that.

However, after looking at some of the statistics it's pretty amazing, for instance..

US 2002
25363 male suicides
6232 female suicides

More than 4x as many males commit suicide. Roughly 11 per 100,000 in 2002 in the USA (total that is).

Greece only had 3.2 suicides per 100,000 in 2004.

The suicide rate in this country is absolutely shocking. Especially among youths. I never knew anyone who'd committed suicide in 12 years of living in RSA, but here is a completely different story. Probably tied in to the mental illness rates, something like 1 in 5. In RSA, if people have a therapist or are taking medication, they have serious problems. But here, everyone and their dog has a shrink and is taking some kind of medication. It's just insane(no pun intended)

The saddest part for me is that in the more well-off countries people are killing themselves while in the poorer countries people are usually killing each other or being killed by their living conditions.

Countries nearer to the equator = more seasonal sunlight = more serotonin production = less seasonal depression.

Google serotonin + sunlight for more info.

The GDP correlation looks iffy either way, tbh ;/

yes i think its something about the culture. and a lot of those countries don't have great living conditions either but apparently the people are happy.

is there a map of the us that breaks down the suicide rates?

Daaaaaaaamn Alaska.......no wonder AKR is always so pissed off.

I guess months and months of darkness gets pretty depressing though. Still, it's one of the places that many people are looking to move to because it's so open and one of the few more wild places left available for US citizens.

Technically Marxism is anti government which tends to lead to communism thus making a Communist government a contradictory. That would be like having an anarchist government. There can be no one dictator in communism otherwise it's totalitarianism.

The data that the OP presented show that the richest nations have the highest suicide rates and the absolute poorest nations have an almost non existant suicide rate. I would like to see in addition to these two charts a divorce rate chart. It would seem that in the rich nations where people can afford to divorce there would be higher suicide rates also. This also matches with the numbers another poster presented showing that suicide rates are higher among men.

I read an article recently showing that in the US 75% of all divorces are women leaving men and 90% of those divorces the man never saw it coming. It usually happen when the kids are going to college or leaving the house, the man starts thinking about retiring and making plans to spend time as a couple, and the woman blind sides him with wanting a divorce. This along with the fact that the man is usually then financially ruined and the woman is living the high life trigors suicide in a lot of men.

Discuss.

Highest sucicde rates are among the elderly (85+) with the age groups just under that with the next higest, maybe it is because of industrialized rich nations that have the tech and the money to kepp people alive that long and support and treat people with severe diseases is the cause for the suicide (at least in the US).

"Mental disorders (particularly depression and substance abuse) are associated with more than 90% of all cases of suicide; however, suicide results from many complex sociocultural factors and is more likely to occur particularly during periods of socioeconomic, family and individual crisis situations (e.g. loss of a loved one, employment, honor)."
