Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." - Matthew 19:21

Jesus gave us a command to be perfect like our heavenly Father is perfect...

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." - Matthew 5:43-48

Humans can never be perfect.

not everything in the bible is bad

The bible is quite ingenius. It's the perfect blue print to control the society. The idea of an eternal punishment by the wrath of God kept the people in check so that they don't cause chaos in the society is very brilliant.

Who said that he is atheist? Maybe he just doesn't follow an organized religion or, specifically, Christianity...

As for your statement, you should tell that to your brethren when they get all offensive when the topic of evolution comes up...You wouldn't believe how many times I have heard "there is no proof of evolution, thus there is a god".

Perfection is one of those blessed contradictions...

Jesus commands us to "be perfect, as our Father in Heaven is perfect." (The scripture reference has already been posted.) The problem is, we can't be perfect in human terms, let alone in the terms of God. If we could be perfect like God, than we would be God. We are all automatically born with the crimson stain of sin, so we've lost the battle already from the get go.

For those that Jesus encountered who believed that they could achieve this perfection, such as the rich man, He told them to do something that they were unwilling and/or unable to do..."Go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor..." The rich man was unwilling to do this and he walked away from Jesus defeated.

So what's the answer? How do we fulfill God's requirement of perfection? The secret is...God makes us perfect thru His Son Jesus! God fulfills His own requirement in us.

"For by one single offering He has forever completely cleansed and perfected those who are consencrated and made holy." - Hebrews 10:14 (Amplified)

It is by the sacrificial act of Jesus that causes believers to stand forever perfect in the eyes of God! We are perfect, not because of our acts of perfection, but because we have been included in the perfection of Jesus.

Sometimes, sometimes doesn't. Religion give people a set of moral standard so we don't indulge in our primal urges as often as we like.

I can understand why he got upset. It does seem a lot of times people are trying to get us to try our faith. Yes some of us realize that most religion CAN be used as a tool to control society, just look at some of the Pope's of the past, religous terrorism, the struggles in the Europe and the middle East, but religion is not supposed to be used for that. It is supposed to make you a better person, and no one wants to admit that the creation of the universe CAN be argued to have had an intellegent design. When we get more advance, science will probably prove the existance of what we call "God" even if some of the religions are a little off base. Sadly, the existance, or lack can only be proven when we die, therefor you will always have people on both sides aruging. I will respect anyone's lack of faith or faith as long as they respect mine.
