Well, since I have been struggling of late. I will do a journal and see if that helps. It will also be a good tool to go back and look upon different things I did or didnt do right. If it sucks, I will probably delete it.

Today was a normal chest day. Increased reps on all sets and worked my ass off. Started AM cardio today. I do it about an hour and a half before weights. It doesnt seem to bother me fatigue wise so I am good. As soon as my wife gets home, I will go for my PM walk. My walks are usually 25-30 min(1.5 mi) Then I will eat my chicken and take my big ass to bed. I was off work today and enjoyed the rest. Bieng a CNA is hard work. Walking for almost 8 hours a day is ruff on the feet. LEts see how good ol back day goes tommorow.

Good to see you started a journal Fred!

What do you do for cardio prior to lifting?

How is your diet plan going?

Hope things are well with your family.

Had an old journal....

Had an old screename....

Now I have a new one.

Weighin: 319.8lbs(I think i gained a pound or something...ugh)

Macros for MondayTotals: 2,498 kcal 282g carbs 195g proteins 64g fats

No exercise.: (

Body feels: good recovering fine...looking still to Friday or Saturday as my testing day for 5X5...excited to start a new program.

Diets been ok, finally got to the grocery for some veggies...need fiber badly and things have been a little stopped up lately.

I should exercise tommorow maybe do some abbreviated arms and some no weight added squats....and a decent cardio session.

Im still trying to lower the fat intake marginally and get to my 42.5/35/22.5 ratio...its hard but ill get there.

Not sweating the weighin im holding some decent water weight right now from breaking with workouts and some salt and carb rises in my diet I should be cool in the next month for losing 6-8 lbs again.

Dude, what is your journals name, cuz I know it aint mine bro!

Not gonna lift today, the boy was up till 4 am, I am tired as hell. I might go fishin today, I dunno yet. I will still do cardio. My cardio is a 1.5 mi walk in about 30 minutes. I will do that 3x a day. So I am gonna go rest.

Freddie Beef

My legs used to be my strongest point till I tore up my left knee. I really havent squated in a long time. I really never thought about all the walking building up leg muscles. Only 300 pound squats. I will tone down the walking a bit after I get caught up.

TheKansan

Sorry I didn't see your journal until now Fred. On days I work both jobs I exercise, sleep, and work, and am online for only about 15 minutes.

Anyway good luck to you. Have you considered doing deadlifts? They might not bother your knee as much as squats.

Freddie Beef
05-24-2007, 09:43 AM
I always drop the intensity every once on shoulder day to help save those precious used to be torn rotator cuffs. Today was one of those days they felt achy and I did minimum reps. I est 3 min between sets on the first exercises and 1 min between the iso lifts. I rest 30 seconds on calf raises.

Military Press:140/3 sets/6,6,6
Upright Row:120/3 sets/6,6,6
Dumbell Side Raises:35/3 sets/6,6,6
Dumbell Bent Laterals:35/3 sets/6,6,6
Dumbell Front Raises:35/3 sets/6,6,6
Calf Raises:100/4x20/(I hold a 50 pound plate in each hand)

KANSAN, I have thought about doin deads again, but I am to worried about my lower back too. I injured it bad a while ago doin them.

Calories/protien/carbs/fat for today:2236/264/167/66
I am gonna skip the other 2 walks for today cuz I got some chaffing goin on. Should be better tomorrow.

This is the 3rd weigh in with a gain. I have been par with my diet, all I can think of is what heathershubby said, since i havent trained my legs in so long, they are probably bulking up. I WILL NOT GAIN ANOTHER POUND!!! I will be dammed if I get back to 400 pounds. I still have my eyes set on the 373 pound mark, I WILL be there by july 4th. I am gonna have to dig deep and bring back the inner beast I keep hidden. Its time to get animalistic on this fat.

My right knee bothered the hell out of me too. Losing 100 pounds took enough pressure off of my knee and I could do squats. I started with lighter weight, and even body weight squats.

Also i read an article in Muscle and Fitness that was about Sumo deadlifts being good for people with back and knee problems. You might look into that.

WOW!!! I blasted thru weights I have been stuck at for about 6 weeks. I have no clue why I got so much stronger, but I aint complaining. THe weights felt like feathers today! 3 min rest between sets as always. except for calves, which is 30 seconds.

Close Grip Bench Press:190/10,10,10(movin up to 195)
Pushdowns:220/10,8,7
Dumbell Triceps Extensions:105/10,9,8
Skullkrushers:95/10,10,10(movin up to 100)

Really good workout. I am dong 2 30 minute cardio sessions a day instead of 3. I am figuring out how many calories to eat tonite. Probably around 2400-2600. Time to rest . I do not do any cardio or weights on weekends either.

I think I am gonna increase my max on bench tomorrow. I got 10,10,7, the last time. I hope I can irk out those last 3 reps on the last set. THen I can do 230 pounds for 3 sets. That in turn, will help increase the rest of the reps on other exercises.

I did it, I got all 3 sets for 10 reps. IT about killed me on the last rep. It felt like the bar was moving a millimeter every 5 seconds. I am satisfied where I am strenth wise. As long as my reps stay at 6-10 on all my sets, I aint worried. I am gonna lose this weight this time. I am happy strength wise right now.

Okay, Since I began on this weight loss journey on Jan 1st, 2007 I have only been able to follow my diet about 64% of the time. Yes I have every caloric amount and every cheat day and meal written down since then. My diet has always been my down fall and I intend on fixing this problem starting today. I will go back to what I was doing in January and stay with that caloric amount and I will be perfect( have no choice, since I will be winning a contest in november)And that means NO CARDIO. Now before everybody gets there panties in a wad, let me explain. When I do cardio, I get mad hungry. I am gonna focus on my diet for the next 2 weeks. Then incorporate cardio on appropriate days. I had a bad day yesterday. ANd I want it to be that last one too. I know I wont get to my goal of 373 by july 4th, but I am sure as hell gonna try. I just realized this is my biggest post ever I think. Time to get the weights ready for triceps day.......

I know the frusteration of cardio causing hunger. Brings back memories of me going to the gym, working out for an hour, and then going and getting a large slurpee after and a bag of doritos. I figured I could eat whatever I wanted as long as I ate it right after my workout because it would be burnt off. Wrong....... what a waste of workouts. I did the same thiing as you. For a long time there actually, I thought cardio was causing me to gain weight (not cause I ate afterwards, I was just convinced that doing cardio caused my body to go into starvation mode or something and I would gain weight). This is because I would do cardio 2 days in a row and I'd gain weight on the scale.

I wouldn't cut cardio out completely though. Why not just do it once a week or something and after it just slam the protein shake back and don't eat anything for 2 hours, just doooooo it (nike style). It's hard man I forget what cravings are. On this keto diet I have to force myself to eat my meals (not cause they dont taste good, but just because I'm not hungry because I am sstill full from the last meal). Never going back to a high carb diet..... ever. One problem Ive mentioned before with high carb is simply the motivation. If you cheat and eat some pizza on a normal diet it's not a big deal, it's "just 1000 calories". but if you do it on a low carb diet it can be disasterous, knock you out of keto, mess up your body. I find that on a normal diet I am cheating daily though.

I love having the weekend off. I work every other weekend and it really sucks. I probably got myself written up at work last night, a nurse and I got into a big argument and it got nasty. I have a history of arguing with the nurses. See, a nurse is like my supervisor, but this nurse is on a another shift, weighs like 500 pounds and engulfs large amounts of food at a time and wonders why she is fat and unhappy, I really dislike her. But anyway, I am goin to cook about 5 bags of boneless skinless chicken breasts today, and rest and play cars with my son. I hope everybody else enjoys there weekend.

So I am gonna weigh myself this friday for damage control, then I will reweigh when it is time to weigh in for the contest. But dont worry, I will still pull good numbers. Now so since I am not gonna weigh myself that often. I am starting cardio in am tommorow.

While am waitng for my morning cup of coffee to do it magic, I will explain my weightlifting workout. When I post my wotkout, it looks like strait sets, which it is, but I incorporate rest pause training on almost every set, no more than 5-6 breaths inbetween reps though. Usually on the last 2 sets. My form I keep pretty good, every once in a while, I video tape myself lifting and then watch it late that night just to check on form. I keep my reps between 6-10 on all sets. Once I get all 3 sets to 10 reps, I increase the weight by 5 pounds. I also try to increase each exercise by 1 rep every time. That way, as time goes along, weights will increase. I also do not train legs because I dont feel safe Squatting right now with my left knee( lost my brace I used to squat with). I do chest on monday cuz it is my heaviest and most taxing day. Then I do back on tuesday becasue it is an opposite muscle group. Then on wednesdays I do shoulders to rest chest and back, but aslo to kinda pre exhaust my bi's(uprightrows) and my tri's(military press). Thursday I do my biceps, which would be my heaviest feeling day, and then Friday I do triceps. I have been steadily gaining on this routine for the last 2 years. I used to do 4 sets on each exercise, but was losing strenth and when I cut it to 3 sets, my strength shot up massivly. There ya go.

I survived some pretty tough cravings tonite. On thursdays, my wife brings home the extra food from the church group she runs, and I had some of the food which I always do, not alot but just some to add to my normal meal. Usually I blow the diet the rest of the night and I am still standing( and still 399) cant wait till tomorows workout, might make it an ultimo arm killer workout. I dunno yet.

Let's keep on working our ass off and see if we can make it happen.

So me:
--> No cheat
--> Cardio everyday
--> Lifting everyday.

You
--> No cheat
--> Cardio everyday
--> Walking
--> Kick ass everytime you weighlift.

Seems quite simple.

Lucky you!
My boss is okay I guess but can be a total ass sometimes.
He is trying to convince not to go to med school, saying I have the skilss to succeed in the world of accounting/finances.
I love my job and I am good at it, just don't seem to give my life a purpose.

Yep, let's just hope.
Don't want to be 50 and wondering have I made the right choice.
1) Doing something I am good at and have great chances of succeeding and make good money (I am already making more than my mom)
or
2) Take 4 years off from the work force, start from zero so I could do something I always loved and wanted to do but not sure of my chances of success.

Freddie Beef

what do you want to really do?

That is the thing.
I love what I am doing now and I am good at it (very good and not bragging)
Just got a nice bonus plus a raise.

The thing is at the end of the day I don't feel fufilled. Like I haven't accomplish ****.

I always wanted to go to med school but wondered if it was the right thing for me. So I took the safe choice, accounting/finances.

I decided to take the MCAT next year or year after next.
The way I see it, if I don't like practicing medicine, I can always come back to the world of finances as a consultant for Pharmaceuticals investments (will get my MBA and all).

I rather risked it all while I am young (no kids or wife, still live at home and have significant savings) than sit while I am old wondering : What if?

I have seen to many people in my family go after the "safe choice" instead of the "right choice" for them.

Yep and she liked it in a way but not in another. She worked in a nursing home and it hurted her to see how some of the other CNA's where treating the old people.
She made us promise not to put her in a home when she gets old.
Now she is a RN with some other certifcations (forgot).
She likes it so far but can't stand some doctors.

I use ON classic whey and GNC weightgainer 1850, plus I take GNC megaman gold vitamins. I use the scoop from the protien(1/4 c) and I will drink on workout days 2 scoops protien/1 scoop wtgnr, then 5-6 more shakes of 1 scoop of each. I do not add any fat to diet. Before anybody says this is stupid, or it doesnt work, DONT! It works for me and I like it and feel better doin it. Besides once I get to 350-375. preferably 350, I will ease into the whole food thing. Here is a breakdown: Cal/Pro/Carb/FAT

workout days:2025/214/247/20

Hey Fred. I'm not going to waste any time telling you not to do this since you are probably dead set on it, all I can say is be careful. Be sure to take your multivitamins and drink plenty of water.

My weight bench kinda bent really bad today. So I only got 2 sets in. IT is only supposed to handle 200 pounds on the part that bent, and I had 320, I will fix it though. Instead, I went and freestyle wrestled for 45 minutes with my 15 year old nephew. Who is 6'1 and 220 solid pounds. I am wore out.

My shoulders have been achy for a few weeks now and I think it is time to rest them for about a week. I do not want to tear them rotator cuffs again. That is okay though. I always end up stronger after a break anyway. I will weigh in and post measurements on July 3rd. I am afraid there will be increases though. I will still do my cardio.

Everyone needs a break from time to time. Just make sure you don't use it as an excuse to go on a binge.

Have a good one.

I have aready been suckin ass on my diet, I have been doin good the past week. NO BINGES in my future, besides, it costs too much momey to waste food by pigging out on it. I am what they call the middle class, cant afford to pay bils, but make too much money to get help. That is why my wife is going to school to become a surgical technician. I plan on staying active during my break, but no lifting. I should drop a few pounds too.

I hear ya, but what you have to understand is that the statement in quotes is a choice. Your choice. It's not just some random thing in life that you don't have control over like the weather or politics or how your boss treats you. You have control of everything that goes in your mouth. We all face the same problem. Keep trying.

Have a good one.

I recently talked to an old pastor friend, and he said the same thing, we are in control of so many things in life. It is up to us to make the proper changes. We can ask the good lord to help us, but in the end, we, his children, have to take the first steps on following his path. We are in control of our bodies. I am in control and will stay in control. I have FINALLY found a really close circle of people to support me(the one on this site is good too) but to have someone in your face and telling you something is different. I have adjusted my diet and am no longer gonna let food run my life. I guess I ahd some sort of addiction or somethin. ( I had even seen a shrink to help sort this all out) I now have certain things I do when bad cravings start. I feel silly getting all this help, but sometimes that is what it takes. Well, enjoy that velocity diet,I heard it was a killer. Good luck.

I wish I saw smaller numbers everytime I weighed in. Good luck with everything. I agree with you on the break, I just had a couple days where I exercised a lot and it was intense. I felt kind of tired and useless after. So I took 2 days off and now I'm good as new and ready to get back into this thing for real. Good luck with everything and I wish you sucess.

Now that I know why I have been struggling so bad, it really pisses me off. I cant believe I am/was addicted to food. I always harped on people and called them weak and lazy asses when I was told that. Now I understand why I was having the cravings and when. I feel confident(the real kind, not the pretend kind) Tha I will suceed. I will weigh in next Friday, and take my bruises. I am sure I have gained fat, but If I go perfect on diet, which I pretty much have too, I will be good to go.

Check out TheKansan's thread too I know he posts in here but he was in the same boat as you and was actually worse and he loses consistantly 4-5lbs EACH week. It's amazing to me, so maybe you could look into what his diet is and what's working well for him etc? No need to do crash protein diets (ok who am I to talk??? lol I am starting velocity this next weeK! DOH!). Still at 400lbs I envy the results one can get. I miss loosing 5lbs a week.......

4lbs a week = 17lbs a month = 90lbs+ by the end of the contest.

I like that. Keep in mind that I had been going strong for 5 months before the contest even began, so I already had my eating, cardio, and lifting routine set and had been doing them for months. Its a lot harder when you are just getting started.

I don't really have any secrets, 99% of everything is in my journals. I may also be blessed with the ability to lose weight easily, which seems odd considering how fat I was and still am.

Don't be modest bro! What you said is key, how 99% of the stuff is in your journal. You're not doing magic you're just doing hard work that is the key and what is so cool about watching your weight drop like a ton of bricks. Few people have the ability to stick to a diet the way you are doing it. Walking every day for 120+ days in a row? And continually loosing 4-5lbs a week. That is impressive and quite amazing. I know it has nothing to do with the contest for you, but it's motivation for the rest of us in the contest for sure. Most people at 475lbs would be getting gastrobypass and other stuff or lipo... etc.

Good on you man I'd give you reps but I gotta rep other people before it will let me.

Yeah see 18lbs a month is about 4lbs a week you could easily be hitting that ****. I agree other people don't know what it's like to be overweight... but we don't know what it's like to be skinny either! I mean we all know the guys who are naturally ripped, six pack, 9% body fat........ but only a very very small percentage of people are actually like that, just stand out more.

It's sort of like when you are selling your house and all of a sudden it seems like every house in town is for sale, but it's just that you are more aware of "For Sale Signs" since your house is for sale). In reality, many people who are thin are not happy with their bodies either. I have a 30 year old friend who is 5'7" and 145lbs and flabby. I mean, the guy must have like 20% body fat.

Anyways yeah I mean I would rather be a skinny mofo and just pack on some weight and get to 200 then cut, but it's easier said than done too. After seeing some of the stuff guys on these forums eat when they do their "CLEAN BULK" I am glad I don't have to do it. Some of these guys consume 4500 calories a day or more of just powders and tuna and chicken and ...... oh man Im gonna be sick. I just couldnt do that ****.... too much eating.

You are really too kind. I am here at home blushing. I hit some real lows in the past, and I actually at one point strongly considered weight loss surgery, but the cost was way too high. Besides the surgery wouldn't have fixed my compulsive behaviors. I needed to work out my mental and emotional problems before anything would help me.

Sorry to shift the focus away from you Fred, this is your journal.

No problem bro.....it is good that people see that it isnt always as simple as just doin the diet, there are many factors involved, like the compulsive, emotional, and physical problems that go along with it. It isnt always as easy as just doin it.

lol. Just speaking the truth man! You are a motivation to me. In regards to the mental/emotional problems, that is really true. I still haven't worked those out.... instead I am just using diet (keto) to control them, which is fine I guess. But if I ever go off keto it seems like carbs just run rampid on me. When I finally do get down to my goal weight I plan to try a 40/40/20 diet, but if I can't handle it then I am perfectly ready to remain on a keto diet the rest of my life if that is what is needed. Losing weight is seriously 90% mental, 10% diet. A proper diet can be made up by a dietician in 40 minutes. But implementing that diet and having the willpower to follow it properly can take an amazing amount of hard work.

I think what really speaks to a persons ability is when they have a bad week and don't lose any weight, or even gain weight (look at my sig!) and they don't let it phase them - they just keep right on going. Likewise, I think it works the opposite too... people who have tons of success and lose 20lbs and then they think "I am going to reward myself and have a treat"..... then bamm, a month later they have gained the 20lbs plus. You can never lose sight of your goals ever. I think you possess these qualities as well as many other people on this forum who are very successful and I am trying to implement them myself. This is why I almost don't look at the scale anymore, I go by measurements and how I feel. It's a catch 22....... if your measurements are decreasing, and you feel great, then eventually your weight will follow!

This post (all of not, not just what I quoted) is dead on!

I think I finally have a handle on the mental side of the equation, but no doubt that is the key and if you do not address it is almost impossible not to end up back where you started or worse. All the diet and exercise and weight loss in the world does not erase the bad habits and depression and anxiety and other things that help make people fat. I lost 80+ pounds in 1998, but had gained it all back in a little over 2 or 3 years because I was still depressed and tended to drown my sorrows in donuts, pizza, and McDonald's!

Even on this go 'round I have battled the "reward" issue you talked about. Thankfully it never lasted a month and I never gained back all of the weight, but there were several occasions that I lost 10 and then decided to take a break to reward myself and before you know it I was off the wagon for 2 or 3 weeks and had put 5 back on. I am watching it to make sure I don't keep falling into that trap.

Freddie Beef

And it is a trap too, using food as a reward for yourself is a bad idea.
