How did he not get knocked down or get knocked out from this. Nearly 20 years later and I still don't get it. Would a 95 mph fastball to the jaw be the equivalent to a heavyweight boxing punch flush to the jaw?

If we were going by the "Cardinal Way" then about 12-15 Pirates hitters were drilled after this hbp.

i think the reason why he didnt get knocked out from it was he saw it coming. and he had a bit of time to react to it so he knew it was coming and prepared for it. using your boxing statement. is like that punch wasnt clean missed it by a bit or else it would of been a KO.

Getting hit in the face with a baseball is more likely to lead to a facial fracture but less chance than a KO versus a punch.

Smaller surface area for force to act upon. Punch carries a lot of weight and momentum behind it but over a greater surface area, which means less likely to fracture ur face but more likely to rattle your brain around your skull.

Think of getting hit with a baseball vs a boxing glove as getting hit in the face with a golf ball vs a soccer ball. The golf ball is gonna shatter whatever part of your face it hits but you'll probably be conscious while a soccer ball kicked hard enough can easily knock you out but won't shatter your face (could break your nose tho).
