View Full Version : Not including injuries, who is/was the biggest waste of talent in sports?

Whether it be laziness, off the field issues, misuse by team, etc.

First name that comes to mind is Josh Hamilton. Guy was a huge prospect and could've been the best player for years but got hooked on drugs. Finally got clean and came back into baseball and tore it up for a couple years before his body broke down and he relapsed.

If you're old enough to remember Lamar Odom being drafted and realize he didn't make a single ASG.

Would be a top 5 defensive player if he could stop drinking and getting DUIs

Recent Nominees:

1.) Josh Gordon - straight up dominated with potato QBs, imagine the contract he'd have now.
2.) Aldon Smith - Defensive terror, absolutely bonehead mistakes. Would be making JJ Watt money right now.
3.) Hamilton - Possible one of the most naturally talented baseball players.
4.) Ryan Leaf - huge crybaby, and just refused to be humble.
5.) Justin Blackmon - the couple games he did play, he was a difference maker. Imagine the Jags now with Robinson, Hurns and Blackmon playing.

Didn't include Jamarcus Russell because I never thought he was that great of a prospect. He was big, with a cannon arm. Typical Raider draft pick. Anyone who knew anything about football knew he would bust.

Leon Lett. Dude was a beast when he was off the substance.
Dante Hawkins, was a hometown kid from my school was going to be the star receiver at A&M back when they were good in the RC era, but failed two drug tests. He would have been a first round pick if he'd stayed clean.

Josh Hamilton actually made a decent career for himself, not HOF but solid player for a solid amount of time. Some of these others haven't.

Probably Marinovich.

Controversial but, in terms of current players, Russell Westbrook should be considered.

The guy is an athletic freak and the fact that he isn't regarded as a top 2 player in the league tells me that his potential is being wasted. Whether it's a result of coaching, mental capacity or a product of the system he is in, a player like that should never miss the playoffs like he did last year.

As incredible as Curry is, this should be Westbrook's league.

You realize there are guys that could have been HOF'ers that amounted to NOTHING, and you bring up someone who is a top 10 player because he's not a top 2 player..

You realise that literally one post above mine someone brought up SHAQ and you chose my comment to argue that a great player couldn't be better.

In my opinion Westbrook has the potential to achieve a lot more in the NBA than he has so far.

Thanks for your input to the thread though.
