At least 1g per lbs of body weight is often used as a rough figure for maximum results, but what is the minimum amount you could consume and still make good gains?

I for example weigh 180 lbs....would I still be able to build muscle on 70-80g a day?

Short answer; yes you can still build mass on 70-80gs of protein, however you are most definitely limiting your gains, I would try at least 120-150g a day.

.6 grams per pound is the lowest recommended I have seen; with .8 being a more comfortable minimum, and 1g+ being more than enough.

better question is how you could eat in a surplus (needed to make "gains") and be at that low an intake

Like even 3k cals of oats is over 100 grams of protein, and its considered a carb.
