View Full Version : Lakers no longer premiere FA destination?

Was just thinking about this today. With all of the big time FAs out there (LBJ, Wade, Bosh, Melo, Gortat, Deng, Ariza, Gasol, Lowry, etc) this off-season, not one seems committed to L.A. There's a genuine possibility that they get shut out and don't end up with ANY of these guys.

Never been a big Laker fan but it would shock me if things played out like that.

Dr. Buss's charm, smarts and charisma are definitely missed.

Nobody wants to take a paycut to play with Kochilles Bryant. After he retires the Lakers will start landing free agents again

It hasn't been in the 21st century; this is nothing new.

Aside from resigning Kobe Bryant back in '04 (I think it was), name one stud free agent in the last 10+ years who went to play for the Lakers.

It's this. It's still Kobe's team. No one wants to go be his bitch. Once he's gone peeps will want to play there again.

Not one of those players were free agents when they came to the Lakers.

Obviously I'm a Kobe fan but I'll be real and admit it's because of Kobe's contract. That's all there is to it.

meta world peace was and he's nothing now but back when they signed other than maybe lebron there wasn't a better on ball defender in the nba for a year or 2. it's not that free agents didn't want to play there they couldn't afford to pay them i'm a huge kobe fan but let's face if kobe ever wanted to get that 6th ring to match jordan he never should've signed that 2 year 40million dolllar deal. Should've played for 5 mil a year and signed 1 or 2 other big time players and won 1 or 2 more rings.

This. Lakers would probably be front runners for Carmelo AND Lebron if Kobe was getting paid like $15MM. Could offer both a max in that situation.

Lol @ the delusional Laker fans in here naming 3 guys they traded for.

1 of which OPENLY SPURNED YOU in his ACTUAL free agency

LBJ: Was always either Cavs or heat
Wade: Why would we want that washed up bum that disappeared this years finals/probably staying on the same team like Duncan/Kobe
Bosh: Rockets already offered him a max contract on a team with 2 top 20 players.
Melo: Still possible for him to sign with the Lakers
Gortat: Re-signed a big contract with his current team right away
Deng: Might be part of plan b if Melo doesn't come
Ariza: Lol like he's a priority they already had him and he's not any younger
Gasol: Has still expressed interest in re-signing with or without Melo, fans call him Gasoft and abuse him so I wouldn't be surprised if he left.
Lowry: Same as Gortat
Isaiah Thomas: Averages near Kyrie Irving numbers and the Lakers are on his short list of teams he's interested and Kobe is his favorite player and he looked up to him growing up.

Kobe's contract ate up so much cap space...it's hard to win when you throw a 48m/2yr contract at a player who hasn't even been healthy for the last two seasons

Forgot about him... a little surprised that no one's targeting him. He's not half the defender that Lowry is though. Maybe that's why?

This + 2 bad contracts that I can think of off hand (Kobes is high although he was once great, he is just going to be good at best, and Nash making 10mill and will probably get injured and be a cheerleader most of the season)

When I went on a cruise last month I talked with Thomas's dad (srs). I think it was game 3 of Thunder Spurs in the playoffs. There was a tv playing the game near the casino. I sat down to watch and this black guy started talking about basketball then he said he's his dad. He had a Kings hat on, a Rolex with a diamond bezel, a gold chain, and a gold ring. He talked about how he lives in Seattle and Jamal Crawford is a close family friend. (I think he's from there or something) He showed pictures of Isaiah and Kevin Love playing in high school. He said he would love it for his son to play for the Lakers and his son felt the same way because Kobe is his favorite player.

I can't believe a good chunk of the Lakers pitch to Melo was trying to convince him La La would thrive in Hollywood if he was on the Lakers.... That's stooping low, especially since she want's him to stay in NY anyways..... That's a desperation pitch....

Why would the New York media say he wants to go to the Lakers?

The same NY media that said it was a done deal he was staying in yesterday? They are just as bad if not worse than any media outlet in the country..... The pressure and random B.S/harshness from NY media causes some players in some sports to fold like cheap tents...

No chance he is going to LA, why go to a chittier situation, for less $, less upside, much tougher conference, and leave the GOAT city on the planet? If he leaves it will be for 1 of 2 things, 1. to go play with Lebron (which is looking slim), 2. To play on the Bulls and watch Derek Rose get hurt 30 minutes into the season and for much less $, I would laugh if that happens... Lakers have Pau, who is probably gone, Kobe who is coming off an injury and well beyond his championship winning days, a draft pick who is going to be a bust, and no coach.....? It makes nooooooooo sense... It's Ramona "so ugly she couldn't pay to get laid" Shelbourne trying to get more people following her, she is the one stirring this nonsense up.... It's realistically between Bulls and Knicks....

Keep telling yourself that, you're probably a irate Bulls or Knicks fan. I wouldn't even be mad if he didn't sign with the Lakers I just want that phaggot to make his decision already. The Lakers aren't going after any free agents until they know Melo isn't coming and if he keeps dragging on like he is now there might not be any free agents left. I want them to sign Isaiah Thomas and he's already met and talked with the Suns.

Could it be the pressure and knowing you'll always be compared to kobe, magic, and other laker greats. Also, it could be that kobe is running the show in LA and is a very hard teammate to play with. Also, maybe the lakers seem like they get a lot of their good players through trades which takes away a lot of cap room.

1.Kobe and Melo are best friends
2. If he goes to Chicago he'll be compared to Jordan every time he does something. "Melo scored 30 for 45 straight games? Jordan averaged over that for a season LOL."
3. The Lakers got Pau (who helped bring 2 championships and go to the finals 3 straight years) for Kwame Brown and Marc Gasol. (who wouldn't have had anywhere near the same impact Pau had in the near future)

1. CBA screwed them
2. No cap space thanks to Kobe
3. Old players
If Kobe would have taken a Duncan type of deal, they could get both Melo and Lebron or Bosh, Parsons.

money? nope

Looking more & more like it's going to be a repeat of 2005 when it was Kobe and not much else. Unfortunate thing is that he's nearly a decade older which means he won't be avging 30+/gm anymore.

They'll be in the running for next year's #1 pick unless something unforseen happens.
