Right now, I aim for about 300 calories for a pre-workout meal. I eat this meal about 30-45 minutes before my 1 hour workout. It usually consists of a nutrition bar (such as a Clif Bar or Lärabar), plus additional carbs (such as from prunes, bananas) or whey protein. I begin to feel hungry towards the end, and I begin to feel the need to gorge on foods after I finish my workout.

My post-workout meals tend to include 2 scoops of whey protein powder (usually Body Fortress or BSN Lean Dessery) and one Slimfast meal bar, plus a little more if I feel too hungry.

Should I add more calories pre-workout to prevent me from overeating post-workout? Should I have an adequate amount of carbs and protein pre-workout?

It's really personal preference as to what you feel helps you perform optimally.

Some people prefer to eat nothing before, nothing after and train fine.
Just play around with different meals, see what you like.
I personally have coffee before and wait till dinner after.

I make a protein cake (mainly whey and egg) before my workout every time. Tastes good and gives me good energy, and they're fun to make and experiment with different flavors.
