We'll just accept that Bullitt is the best and go from there.

The Italian Job had several good chase scenes.

Duel with Dennis Weaver was one big truck/car chase. I believe Spielberg did that.

You guys already have several of the best listed.

Good thread SP.

I personally feel Bullit is pretty cheesy, keeps passing the same few cars over and over, the Charger loses 7 hubcaps, the way the film gets sped up in an attempt to make it look like they were going faster than they were, etc.

Dirty mary/Crazy Larry I like and the 1st time I saw it the ending shocked me. I think some of the Mad Max movies have better chases and every once in awhile a James Bond flick gets it right.

the best car chase scene would be So-tex in his truck chasing me in my truck after I slapped his mama and stole his sandwich !

"Monkey see, monkey do. Makes me wonder who's foolin' who..." Catchy tune in there and Clyde is driving a street sweeper.

The French Connection. No CGI, just a cameraman in Gene Hackman's car doing what he did best, and a really great editor. CGI is fun to watch, but it looks too real to 'be' real. The old way may seem cheesy to the young 'uns, but it forced the directors back then to be more inventive.

Love the French connection chase scene.

came in to say French Connection (assumed Bullit would have been listed as #1 - rightfully so).

There was also a great car chase in Vertigo - it's not a high speed chase, but it's ten minutes of intense silence that really builds the tension of the movie. Would never get studio approval today - they would demand dialogue or at least a soundtrack to it.

Best car chase would have to be Thelma and Louise.

Now picture this.

Replace Thelma and Louise with So-Tex and Oceanside driving off a cliff.

I'd pay to see that.

With a goat and a kitten in the back seat.Would the goat and cat be the love interests of the main characters ?

It's amazing that the iconic car chase scene from Children of Men was one take.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned yet: The first Bourne Identity had a pretty good car chase scene.

Not really a car chase, but a train chase. Batman Begins, the final fight scene between Batman and R'as al Ghul, with Jim Gordon driving stick.

The Dark Knight also had a terrific chase scene (the Harvey Dent getaway scene).
