View Full Version : Why can't someone just make a pvp focused mmo

Diablo was good because you pve to get gear to pvp.

runescape was good because you pve to get gear to pvp.

WoW was good because of the pvp.

Why is there so many carebear mmo's now?

Because MMOs are expensive to make and maintain, and you want to appeal to as many people as possible. They don't care if you like PVP or PVE or whatever, they just care that you buy the game/pay for a subscription.

Darkfall is pvp based.

Ultima Online was the best PvP game ever. Because the best gear was player made and so it was abundant enopugh to be cheap enough to afford to lose. Which you did when you died, since it was full loot.

To stay on topic, EVE online is probably the most "hardcore" PvP MMO right now. ~elite~ pvp in that game is actually hard to pull off and very rewarding, often involves small gangs ranging from 2-5 versus 10 x or more that amount using hit and run tactics. Theres a lot more to it I can't be bothered explaining but research it for yourself.

If CCP's latest projects, EVE Valkyrie the VR game, and their F2P FPS shooter coming to PC do really well, EVE may very well become big. More people, more fights, more pvp, more stories. EVE Valkyrie is actually very promising and is more than likely to bring in a lot of people to the MMO.

It has a yearly tournament which is about as far as ~esports~ as it gets right now.

That's my old account. I've never played Eve except for like 10 minutes and it was so different from everything I have ever played I didn't give it a chance. You think I should check it out again?

Been waiting for a hardcore pvp where u lose ur character and have to start over.. Like Shaiya if u guys heard of that. lol, but better. Risk is fun. Also a pirate mmorpg, like pirates of the burning sea (naval battles) was cool, but died. Sony gave it to some other publisher and pop. is low now.

yes and carebears go crazy when they get killed and have all there items taken, if its a true pvp mmo you should be looted when you die.

Was so heavily dissapointed in this. There is no world pvp, once again its Zoned/instanced. Yea you get transferred into a large zone, but its still not the same. There's no thrill when out in the world PvE'n or anything. Plus there is no loot in the WvW pvp.

PROFIT!

Game companies arent interested in breaking even or not making a profit, they wouldnt survive doing that. A PvP focused MMO would most likely only draw a fraction of players

Carebears sums it up. Have you been to the WoW forums lately? When people found out you had to do two battlegrounds for your FREE legendary cape there was pages and pages of threads crying about it and threatening to quit WoW. I haven't pvped since burning crusade and they still only took me an hour to do.

We don't need more MMOs right now. The genre is clearly suffering right now. Almost every mmo that's been released in the last 5 years has almost completely and utterly failed.

If WoW's pvp improves, WOD is going to be the time for wow to redeem itself. They flew in some of the worlds best pvpers to help balance pvp. I'm glad blizzard has made the decision to completely gut half of the games buttons. Over the years it's been a constant battle of giving people CC to deal with the burst damage in the game, and then giving people more burst to deal with the limited uptime, and it's been caught in a vicious circle.

First game in along time that isnt catered to the casuals. You're either a beast, or ur not. Have fun rage pulling out ur hair when somone jacks you

Holy fukk thought I was one of the few that played L2. Koreans make amazing games in the sense that it's a linear grindfest for levels and gear.

For any L2 brahs, ToI hunting because someone pk'd one of your clannies. Brb rallying the whole clan, going to war, PvP/war for weeks with hunting parties.

Warhammer Online was a good pvp mmo. You could level purely from pvp at level 1. It was also the best open world pvp I ever experienced. Sieging the castles or defending them wad great. There would be huge battles for them. The game seemed horribly managed though and failed to deliver in other aspects of gameplay which led to its fall.

I still have the feels from my 1st ever MMO in 2003.
MU Online, Korean made MMO.

This is actually the 1st ever game that reminds me of the diablo feel.

SSHots are not mine but this is how it looks in 2003.

No auction house, people gather in one area of the map to advertise the things they're selling:

One of the event, Castle Siege where the governing guild depends the castle from everyone in the server.

Also my first mmo, I was like 12 though, leveling was taking too long so around level 50 I decided to get speed hacks, never got banned or caught lol. Got to like level 90 with full dragon set and the chaos dragon axe. Leveling took way too fuking long, not to mention it was boring as hell. It was only years later that I discovered it was a diablo 2 rip off, but the open world nature was pretty awesome. When you died you had a chance to drop one of your equipped items lol.

How the fuk could people be bothered to get those +10 sets honestly, I'll never know. Took way too much time to level. If my 12 year old self was able to google around and get speed hacks, then I'm pretty sure more tech savvy people were duping the fuk out of that game, being able to get such items. It was the first game that introduced me to online scamming, websites that would supposedly offer you duped item sets and a full inventory of Soul/Bless gems if you give them your account info. Lulzy times.

Leveling gets boring if you do it alone and just questing but if you do the events while leveling, its pretty fun.
I used to wait for the hourly (forgot if its really hourly) Chaos Castle, Find the GM, Kill the GM, etc in between questing.

I used to have 3 different +13 sets for my Blade Knight, Magic Gladiator and Wizard. Whats good about those + upgrades are those glowing effects the higher your upgrade is on your gears.

And yes, the open PVP that time was epic. Outlaws guarding the town entrances to kill anyone and its no penalty killing outlaws.
I'm kind of hoping for that kind of pvp in D3.

And level cap in MU Phils that time was 400 there was no hacks. (well afaik)

Used to run a private server about 10 years ago. Such a simple concept to handle the differences between full loot/no loot argument. Just drop 1 item at random.

Pretty sure they mean the original guild wars. It's still instanced PvP but it probably has the best arena type pvp. Their GvG on top of the character customization was unreal. Pretty sure it is quite dead now though.

Archage isn't the first in a long time, just no one talks about the others.

The big three PvP focused games would be DarkFall: Unholy Wars, Mortal Online and Archeage.
Then there are a handful of games like Rust, DayZ, Salem, and Wakfu where they have main interests outside of killing randoms.

ArcheAge is the first MMO since Lineage 2 to give me the fear of the world in PvP and i love it. You should check it out on release. Was looking forward to Wildstar even though it's a lot more casual (played beta), but AA has taken my attention away from it entirely.

The only other one that pops to mind is EVE, but i don't really dig how i can't fly the ship myself from the cockpit like a regular space-flight sim, so i didn't play it long. Tried MO and Darkfall but the combat was clunky and ****, imo

Only other ones that pop to mind are:
1. Camelot Unchained (which i've backed on Kickstarter) - http://camelotunchained.com/en/
2. Black Desert, which looks potentially amazing but also might not come to the west for another 1-2 years, if ever. It uses the same kind of PK/PvP system as L2 from what i've read.

Still in early closed beta i believe so animations/combat isn't tuned yet. This looks more fun to grind in than L2 though...!

PvP gets boring.

When people get bored they stop playing.

When they stop playing, they unsubscribe.

When people unsubscribe population dwindles.

When the population dwindles there isn't enough people to pvp against.

Go back to step 1.
