If you don't do anything extensive, what kind of difference did you really expect?

I've got a 2012 model and probably won't upgrade until it breaks down.

4k monitor
thunderbolt 3.0
usb 3.1
sata express
FANLESS DESIGN
8 cores(not sure if i have to have this)
ddr4 ram

before i upgrade my 2011 mbp
lol at op

i estimate it will be 2016 before i can get all that an affordable price

no point in upgrading so soon unless you make money off your talents and need every second possible(video editing/photo editing)

that's enough Jerry

if you think apple will release an affordable macbook that supports UHD in 2 years i've got some bad news. Current top of the line macbook with 2880 x 1800 native res is the only model with a discrete graphics card..and a mid-range one at that (GT 750). And that ones $2600. Until nvidia releases cards that can push UHD and apple decides to use those cards..keep dreaming. And if it does happen, i promise you it won't be fanless.

13-inch, Mid 2012 Macbook air here, I'm good thx. Haven't seen a laptop in stores that I'd want over this, hope it will survive a long time. Wonder if you can refurbish the keyboard if my keys die (I type a decent amount).

That was kind of my thought when I bought my mac. I ended up going with an air over the pro because I didn't see much of a difference. Still a great laptop though, expensive, but awesome.

not obscenely priced is what i meant to say(1500-2k)
remember, macbooks used to cost 3k+ back in the day
nowadays you can get some nice ones for 1700-2200(this is including the student discount)
1500-2000 would be my max for a new laptop.

will 4k be possible in 2-3 years? maybe..

"Broadwell, Intel's first 14nm product, was demonstrated at the Intel Developer Forum in September and had originally been slated for shipment in the fourth quarter of this year. The chip giant is positioning the ultra-low power variants of its future Broadwell-generation Core processors for fanless laptop, hybrid, and tablet designs."

agree with you on the fanless mbp, it might be a little too soon.
i hope you end up being wrong tho

What'd you expect lol…I got a 2011 (late 15") and don't expect to need or want a new one for another 2 years at least. The hardware is still more than capable. I was kinda tempted by the new geforce cards and better cooling but still…..too much money to buy a new one like its a phone lol

I'd certainly like to be wrong as well, that means things are progressing faster than expected :)

Concerning Broadwell..I'm pessimistic regarding Q4 launch. The current road map is: Haswell Refresh --> Haswell-E --> Broadwell --> Broadwell-E
Haswell Refresh is coming this summer so I would suspect Haswell-E this winter and Broadwell at Q1 2015. The -E processors are suited more to the high end and server markets, but I still think they are going to come prior to Broadwell.

I've made a post in the PC Rig thread a bit ago regarding 4k. I really want it to take off, like yesterday, but there's a lot of areas that need to make some serious advancements first. Display manufacturing, GPU architecture, networking (ISP's), storage, connective interfaces..they all need to make some big leaps forward while staying within a realistic consumer budget.

2k for a MacBook is such a waste... I built an over the top PC for $2000. Evga GTX 780 superclocked, Kingston hyperx 3k 120gb SSD, western digital black caviar 1tb 7200rpm hdd, 16gb corsair vengeance low-profile 1600mhz ram, i5 4670k with a noctua nhd14 equivalent cooler, and an nzxt switch 810 case. I loaded that thing up with 7 case fans and it keeps cool as fuark.

I'd like to see a MacBook come close to that. $2000 is getting near the upper echelons of gaming rigs.
