It would have/could have been. Since facebook has bought it i would expect ads and bulls**** social network integration. I will have to pas until the next VR system comes out.

All of the people in those videos that they are recording are just your average joe who has never played a video game before.

It's not, don't worry. If Carmack jumps ship then maybe I'll get worried, but for now $2 Billion is going to do a lot of good for Oculus.

That being said I'm not buying one until I can try it long enough to ensure I don't puke myself inside out.

TotalBiscuit was mind blown by EVE Valkyrie when he tried it, I'll take his word for it

This.

I've tried it a few times, my buddy bought Devkit v1. All i got to try was VR porn, the weird 3D people/models thing, and Minecraft. **** was 720p though so looked a bit blurry.

Once they knock it up to 1080/1440, it's gonna be mindblowing. You do actually feel really disoriented while playing for the first while. Considered getting the latest Devkit, but gonna wait for release since i expect it's not far away by now.

that vid is an exaggeration, yes. I love mine though. the first time you use it it feels a little magical. Not very usable in games with its low-res but the 1080 one will be on point I think. the "showering beauty" simulation was bonerific

I tried googling that simulation you mentioned, but not finding anything, mind linking?

the thing about the headset is that it 100% blocks your vision, so you can't see your hands on the keyboard for the subconscious position corrections that you'd normally make.

The first-gen games will have a few duds as developers find what types of games can make the best use of the headset.

Tip: it's not shooters, i was dizzy after 5 mins of TF2 when i had a go last year.

Some points:

-Carmack is not going anywhere
-Facebook acquisition will not grossly affect CV1
-CV1 will feature custom displays thanks to the FB acquistion
-Likely CV1 specs include 1440p resoultion, 100+Hz refresh rate, 110 degree FOV, 2-3ms persistence
-Carmack may or may not be working on binaural audio (see his tweets)
-They are working on hand/finger tracking

It sounds like they are going to be pretty close to achieving 'presence' with CV1..really cool stuff.

My bet is car games. Imagine a setup where you have the headest, a seat with the mock gearstick, steering wheel and pedals. Would be an insanely close simulation of real life driving. That's why the space ship one worked quite well. It sort of integrates the controller as the controller for the vehicle and the occulus rift represents you the charcter being able to look around in the cockpit.

dc0GxMk0kk4It would be this but better. You can't turn your head in this so you're not fully immersed.

Imagine using that seat while wearing a vr headset though. Holy phuck

Imagine using that seat while wearing a vr headset though. Holy phuckExactly. It makes me wonder what gaming will be like in 20 years. Can't get much closer than this to real life. It's gonna change porn as well. FA's dream as Japanese guys created a sex sim with the headser.

it's not that I'm worried about FB meddling with the hardware, at least not at this point, it's more that I have an ethical issue with giving FB money

Still can't get over the FB deal, so, so disappointed. Carmack allowed this nonsense? That makes it even more shocking. If you think that a 2 billion dollar deal with FB isn't going to mean a lot of FB stuff meddled in with the Rift you're kidding yourself.

Hopefully Valve has some thing in the works.

It's not a big deal:

- Oculus now has enough funding to live up to its potential
- The head guy working with VR at Valve joined the Oculus a few days after the announcement
- Facebook have just acquired Oculus as a long term investment for the future of technology (10 years or so down the line when VR goes mainstream with social networking, etc.)
- Facebook is leaving the Oculus team to their own devices, nothing has really changed. Their goals are exactly what they were before the deal.
- Do you really think FB is so stupid as to start using the Rift as a platform for adverts, a Facebook OS etc? No one would buy and they know it as this is only going to appeal to a very niche crowd.

You got sources for some of this stuff. Lead VR guy at Valve left for Rift? Sources if you don't mind.
