I just have a regular HTC one, not rooted nothing.

Don't know anything about rooting this phone. Where do I start to accomplish this? Will I lose everything currently on my phone?

Do I have to root before that?

You need to root beforehand, as it says:

Since the WiFi hotspot mods are provided in flashable ZIPs, itís quite obvious that you must have root access and CWM or TWRP recovery installed on your Verizon HTC One. If your device already meets these requirements, just download and flash the mod to enable WiFi tethering. In case you still have an unrooted phone, use the following guide

That is rooting (unlocking your bootloader). If you follow a rooting guide word-by-word, you won't have any problems and will be rooted in 30 minutes at the most.

Rooting is basically android's version of jailbreaking an iphone, but you unlock much more stuff with it than you would with an iphone.

Lol rooting your phone and unlocking the bootloader wouldn't affect anything.

Stop scaring people. It's 100% safe.

OP, it's super easy. Follow guides from XDA and you'll be done in an hour if it's your first time.
