First off, there is no fuking hype. No racist but it's clear the NBA is trying to target a certain demographic, evident by having an uncle tom like Nick Cannon host the awards and putting so much emphasis on "fan" bull****. Nobody wins in this situation and everyone can tell it's lame as fuk.

How to fix:
1. Move dunk contest (and other contests) to local high school or rec center in one of the city's most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Want to do some real NBA cares charity? Give back to that very community. Obviously wouldn't raise lots of revenue, but I'm sure ratings are suffering and they can make it up with commercials and whatnot.
2. Small arena + heavy concentration of black people = lots of hype (no racist) (these are positive traits)
3. Get Duke Tango or similar professional hypeman to hold the mic.
4. Have 1 professional dunker in the competition
5. No props
6. No interviewing judges or dunkers before or after their dunks
7. Have 90 second warm up session (similar to what we just saw), nothing is really counted here.
8. 5 dunks per person, only 3 tries
9. Only 1 company is allowed to be a sponsor (Sprite), and we don't need their fuking COO presenting the award awkwardly.

Better idea:
Washed up NBA star with money rents out a rec center, invites NBA players, and does the above in protest during NBA weekend.

Inner city highschools would make anything feel hype.

You know dudes would be clowning Macklemore or Blake Griffin when he brought out a choir. If you suck they'll let you know you suck, but if you're good then you get the hype you deserve.

If you lose, you DIE!

That would be exciting.

while this is true, the NBA still attempts to divorce itself from any associations with youths and youth culture/behavior. Zero chance the NBA gets more urban.

They should set a series of dunks that all have to attempt instead of having everyone wanting to be innovative. Maybe let them be innovative with only one dunk, but not with all of them. All the failed attempts make it weak.
