does sugar really play that big of a role in weight gain. The reason i ask is i used to be a moderate soda drinker the i got depressed at started to drink a lot of soda like a liter to two letters a day. I did this of and on for a bout 23 years. Is it even worth my time to even think about weight lifting.

You can't change your past behavior, you can only modify and moderate your present and future. Ideally, no soda would be best, but some here and there won't hinder your results. Just keep in mind that one can has about as much sugar as the daily recommended intake. Damage, if any, in the past, isn't necessarily irreparable.

Agreed with the above post. If you're drinking regular soda on a consistent basis, I'd HIGHLY recommend that you stop because it's just so packed with sugar. If you really like that whole fizz thing, then maybe try switching to diet soda instead. I am one of those people that loves soda, so when I switch to diet I find that I can still enjoy and not feel guilty.
Now I suppose I'll be getting people chiming in about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, etc. etc. BUT - I tend to limit my intake still. It's just one of those things that goes very well with my meals.

In contest prep I probably overdo it with the diet soda, but hey - - it gets me through the strict dieting!....haha.........

personally I despise white sugar . I would rather take all my sugar from fruits etc. If I were you I would toss the soda bottle into the bin for good and start lifting. I am sure you will feel bad for some time because your body got used to taking easy, ready-made sugar for years. You are going to feel weak until your body adjusts to using normal food efficiently to derive energy. They call it insulin response or something, I don't know the scientific explanation. What I know is, I eat no sugar. I rarely drink coke and when I drink coke I sort of go crazy with super high energy and often I cannot go to sleep. I think the reason is my body is used using to using the food very efficiently and when I take the condensed sugar in coke, I'm overloaded. Get rid of the soda and you will feel much better.
