Another win for the big red? But seriously, it seems like China is working it's way around the globe lately spending their stashed up dollar bills, and picking up trade deals left and right.

Ecuador is planning to auction off three million of the country's 8.1 million hectares of pristine Amazonian rainforest to Chinese oil companies, Jonathan Kaiman of The Guardian reports.
The report comes as oil pollution forced neighboring Peru to declare an environmental state of emergency in its northern Amazon rainforest.
Ecuador owed China more than $7 billion — more than a tenth of its GDP — as of last summer.
In 2009 China began loaning Ecuador billions of dollars in exchange for oil shipments. It also helped fund two of the country's biggest hydroelectric infrastructure projects, and China National Petroleum Corp may soon have a 30 percent stake in a $10 billion oil refinery in Ecuador.
"My understanding is that this is more of a debt issue – it's because the Ecuadoreans are so dependent on the Chinese to finance their development that they're willing to compromise in other areas such as social and environmental regulations," Adam Zuckerman, environmental and human rights campaigner at California-based NGO Amazon Watch, told the Guardian.
The seven indigenous groups who live on the land are not happy, especially because last year a court ruled that governments must obtain "free, prior, and informed consent" from native groups before approving oil activities on their indigenous land.
"They have not consulted us, and we're here to tell the big investors that they don't have our permission to exploit our land," Narcisa Mashienta, a leader of Ecuador's Shuar people, said in a report.
Dan Collyns of The Guardian reports that "indigenous people living in the Pastaza river basin near Peru's border with Ecuador have complained for decades about ... pollution," which has been caused by high levels of petroleum-related compounds in the area. The Argentinian company Pluspetrol has operated oil fields there since 2001.

I would be ok if somehow the UN stopped this, unless there is some clause that has environmental protection attached to the auction.

I hate the idea of a world police, but this seems wrong.

I guess they couldn't poison their own population fast enough so they decided to destroy another beautiful ecosystem.

I fukn hate humans, we destroy the land that was solely responsible for human survival for thousands of years. It's amazing how many ecosystems we have destroyed throughout the years.

Disgusting, they have a reasonably progressive global agenda but take the most morally deprived shortcuts imaginable. All their future dreams are going to tainted by this chit.

Other countries really aren't much better than China in this regard. Sadly, if China didn't exploit it, it would just get exploited by someone else.

Wipe China off the map because... they did a deal with a sovereign nation to get some oil... righteo, makes sense. Your not retarded at all(/sarcasm).

Meanwhile, the US makes up a fairy tale about Saddam having WMDs that will reach the US, so it can INVADE and instill a puppet government that will allow it (and it's corporations) to pillage the land for oil, all the meanwhile completely letting the country crumble and spiral into a hellhole which also benefits its geopolitical agenda. And this is acceptable somehow?

Don't get me wrong I'm not happy about this, but it seems to me that Americans only agree with capitalism and globalization when it suits them and their agenda. When a country from the 'axis of evil' begins making great strides and expands massively and does business in places like Africa and South America it seems they are an "imminent threat" and the US responds by putting more bases in Africa and condemning the actions.

Warmongers of peace. Hypocrites of peace. Mericuh' of peace.

I hate the idea of a world police, but this seems wrong.

The US IS the world police.

Though they only police things that will further their geopolitical agenda. Environment? The US gov't doesn't even care lmao, they (and their corporations) have destroyed countless environments.

Ah I see clearly now, the whole "they did so we will we", or "you're more evil" arguments. This post has no meaning or resolution, just more bitching and confusion. If China truly wants to be a more responsible world leader than the U.S., they need put the money where the mouth is.

Why the Chinese will run ****. They have long term plans.

Given that they have yet to adequately address their looming realestate bubble, credit bubble, demographic bubble, etc. I'd say it's highly unlikely.

China doesn't want to be responsible. Their record is already stained and will never be more responsible than the U.S.

I disagree, unless the inevitable outcome is similar to that of Japan. 20 years of stagnation from overcapacity and bad debt.

KjOuDmy1ybE

Cliffs: Like Japan before it, China is another bubble economy dependent upon fixed investment for GDP growth. This is especially scarey for your country.

Damn.

Sad article to read. Not because of politics, but simply for the rainforest. It's interesting and disappointing at the same time, to see anyone give away a third of their rainforest. Or see an outside nation, in this case china, willingly position itself to shht on the rainforest.

Of course, even America was a lot more pristine before capitalism got ahold of her. Beautiful great plains, forests etc now poisoned by concrete jungles, with everyone driving down mega freeways in their metal coffins.

Son i am disappoint.
