Researchers might have found the Holy Grail in the war against cancer, a miracle drug that has killed every kind of cancer tumor it has come in contact with.

The drug works by blocking a protein called CD47 that is essentially a "do not eat" signal to the body's immune system, according to Science Magazine.

This protein is produced in healthy blood cells but researchers at Stanford University found that cancer cells produced an inordinate amount of the protein thus tricking the immune system into not destroying the harmful cells.

With this observation in mind, the researchers built an antibody that blocked cancer's CD47 so that the body's immune system attacked the dangerous cells.

So far, researchers have used the antibody in mice with human breast, ovary, colon, bladder, brain, liver and prostate tumors transplanted into them. In each of the cases the antibody forced the mice's immune system to kill the cancer cells.

"We showed that even after the tumor has taken hold, the antibody can either cure the tumor or slow its growth and prevent metastasis," said biologist Irving Weissman of the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California.

One side effect of the treatment was that healthy cells were subjected to short-term attacks by the mice's immune system, but the effect was nothing in comparison to the damage done to the cancer cells.

Weissman's group recently received a $20 million dollar grant to move their research from mouse to human safety testing.

Theoretically, human life spans could become even longer with the advent of the end of cancer. Of course, one of the side effects of a longer life for humans initially was cancer. So perhaps even longer life spans will bring new problems we can't even begin to predict or understand. Having said that, this is awesome news if real.

The source article linked in the nypost article is very positive, but not quite the same as the nypost headline:

One Drug to Shrink All Tumors (http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2012/03/one-drug-to-shrink-all-tumors.html?ref=hp)

Cancer researcher Tyler Jacks of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge says that although the new study is promising, more research is needed to see whether the results hold true in humans. "The microenvironment of a real tumor is quite a bit more complicated than the microenvironment of a transplanted tumor," he notes, "and it's possible that a real tumor has additional immune suppressing effects."

Another important question, Jacks says, is how CD47 antibodies would complement existing treatments. "In what ways might they work together and in what ways might they be antagonistic?" Using anti-CD47 in addition to chemotherapy, for example, could be counterproductive if the stress from chemotherapy causes normal cells to produce more CD47 than usual.

Still, that's pretty amazing and hopefully it's a huge breakthrough.

research article on cd47 ($10 to view) (http://www.pnas.org/content/109/42/E2842.full)

Intro Paragraph:

In this context, some conclusions recently presented by Willingham et al. (1) are inconsistent with existing knowledge about CD47. Most of the therapeutic data presented rely on administration of the anti-human CD47 antibody B6H12 to mice bearing human xenograft tumors. The authors interpreted reduced growth of these tumors as evidence that tumor cell CD47 inhibits their clearance by macrophages via inhibitory signaling through the cytoplasmic domain of SIRPα expressed on these macrophages. Similar conclusions were drawn from xenograft studies previously and subsequently published by the same group, but a recent publication questions this logic (2). Zhao et al. showed that B6H12 mediates antibody-dependent tumor cell killing, contradicting evidence to the contrary by Willingham. Furthermore, if blocking inhibitory signaling through SIRPα on macrophages was sufficient to activate innate tumor immunity, deletion of the cytoplasmic tail of SIRPα in host mice should decrease tumor growth. However, Zhao observed no such response. Notably, Zhao and others have reported that CD47 antibodies enhance nonphagocytic tumor cell killing by neutrophils and NK cells. These results suggest that the antitumor activity of B6H12 in the present xenograft models results from opsonization of the human tumors by this antibody and other undefined mechanisms in addition to inhibiting macrophage SIRPα binding to tumor cell CD47.

Hopefully it pans out.

Big Pharm would rage if we ever found an affordable cure to cancer.

I agree with Shazik

There's already affordable cancer treatment and prevention measures.

The problem with big pharm is that they don't like people getting cured, treated or preventing disease unless it involves patented product. You can't patent certain things. And there are several ways to prevent and treat cancer.

Recently, pharm companies began scrambling to synthesize medicinal marijuana strains. Why?

Because of all the studies showing cannabinoids fight tumors and cancer.

But if it cures cancer why not just legalize across the board?

Once again, this is about money rather than our well being.

Cure for cancer is nothing new. What big pharm is on the brink of, is patentable and profitable cure for cancer.

My heart does go out to all those who themselves or loved ones are going through a bout of cancer. I've been through it with my own family and the nature of the business is sickening.

I did watch a highly paid doctor, in all his infinite knowledge, tell a recently diagnosed cancer patient that it doesn't matter what he eats. Upon diagnosis, he asked the doctor if certain foods should be avoided, or others recommended.

Nope, that's not important , the doctor says.

Of course, the next step was to push for chemo and radiation. ($$$$$$$)

To illustrate how appalling a statement to hear from a USA doctor at a highly reputable hospital...

Tablespoon of sugar impairs immune system for up to five hours, which may be important to avoid if you are fighting cancer.

Lack of oxygen to cells, high acidity give cancer an environment to thrive in. Diet is one of the largest, if not the largest, contributors to high acidity in the body. And although eating raw food increases oxygen levels in the body, of course there are other ways to supplement oxygen.

But that wasn't relevant to the doctor. There is a reason why in this country it's illegal to offer a cancer treatment that doesn't include chemo. Considering chemo wrecks your immune system when you need it most... It should be one of the last resorts, not the first.

Pharm and western medicine is a huge business. It's no accident doctors here require so little knowledge of nutrition. Not required for their career as a drug salesman. There's many elements of our frame that are being left out of the equation, when it comes to "healing" in the USA. Much to the detriment of the people.

Thanks for the read nonetheless.
