I didn't move very fast once I realized what it was either. As I stood up, it ran in my backyard but came back once I left. I used the zoom on my camera too, no need to get too close :)

LOL They're cute little guys, but they can be absolutely vicious! Those little buggers are all over my apartment complex at night. They like to rummage around in the big metal dumpsters. They sound like they've got ball bats pounding away in there. Ha, they're pretty brazen!

I fawking HATE racoons. I would have grabbed my car keys and revved the engine, then ran over that sucker.

And squirrelsI don't run over squirrels on purpose. That's just happens. Racoons, on the other hand, . . . .Vroom, vroom!

I almost hit a goose and 3 goslings yesterday. I kept thinking, "Run geese! Run!! I would hate to be responsible for all that pate taken at such a young age. But we all know I'm hell on wheels.

They are all over here for some reason, I don't know why. Several years ago I found one torn to pieces in my back yard by my two rotties.

They're cute, but they're no good. I saw two of them carjack an old man last year.

Pretty cool!

A couple of years ago, I was walking through the woods, and I saw this raccoon walking toward me on the trail. I stood still so that I could watch it for a while. It walked right up to me and seemed to be fascinated by my shoes and their texture. The raccoon kept touching them as if curious, and after a couple of minutes calmly walked back into the woods. They seem to be intelligent animals -- I think it would be interesting to explore their cognitive abilities more thoroughly.

LOL They are incredibly intelligent. And they can do with their little hands just about what you can do! :) A good sized one can also kill a grown 'coon dog' if they happen to tussle with them in the water!

I get coons, skunks and other critters busting in my pet door and stealing cat food. I actually have to put a heavy tool box inside the door at night so they can't get in.

THIEVES!!

This one was out during the day? They normally sleep all day but still may be out in very early morning or very early in the evenings. Looks like a good candidate for target practice, but away from the pool....

I blasted one with my Nissan a couple of years back on a ramp coming off the LI Expressway, it was huge and I caught him square on the license plate. I dragged it maybe 3/10 of a mile and finally it came out and I ran it over with a back tire, cars behind me were dodging it. Cracked my front air dam, bent the license plate back, tore off a shield under the car.

Lucky it was your two rotties. A one-on-one.... Raccoon may still lose, but your vet will have no problem making his rent/morgage payment that month.

Raccoons seem to not be phased at all by the presence of humans. A couple years ago my upstairs neighbor was eating a dinner of salmon, salad, and wine on her back porch. Two smallish raccoons came up the stairs, onto her porch, and climbed up on her table, and started to help themselves to her meal.

She ran inside, called my wife to come upstairs (I wasn't home), and they watched through the screendoor. After a while, neighbor lady decided she wanted pictures, but they weren't coming out well through the screen, so the two women slowly walked out on the porch and stood about a foot and half from the busy raccoons and took a bunch of pictures. The animals didn't seem to care, just ate all the food, including spilling and lapping up the wine, and even stopped to "pose" for the camera.

Once all the food was gone the raccoons calmly left, without a look or snarl at the two humans. :)

We had to bury this little guy last week as he must have been down in that drainage ditch before some heavy rains hit and then just couldn't get back out before he drowned.

I was not at all expecting him to be nearly as heavy and solid as he was!

They are cute but mean and nasty little f'kers. Don't mess with them. They'll kill a Jack Russell, and if you've ever had Jacks, you can appreciate just how tough that is.
