Half of what I'm reading tells me tea is a diuretic, and everything else says tea hydrates you. What is it?

I drink more tea than straight water and never felt dehydrated.....

I used to drink a lot of green tea (4-8 cups every day), and that's one of the main reasons I stopped. Always dehydrated. If I drank tea before bed I would literally wake up in the night with a dry mouth and needing water.

Now I'll allow myself a cup a day here and there, and I always follow it up with a glass of water and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Note: my personal dehydration experience with water could be because I was drinking tea instead of water. I wasn't getting both.

Caffeine only has a diuretic effect at doses above 500 to 600 milligrams per day and, thus, the impact of tea consumption on hydration depends on caffeine content and has a relatively high negative impact threshold.
