Hi, I'm thinking of cycling to the gym before my weights session, it is a 5 mile trip. Question is will I be harming my ability to build muscle by using up my energy stores during the ride making the body resort to using my muscle for fuel, as I read something along these lines. Or on the other hand will it help my tap into fat stores for energy?
Anyone with nutrition knowledge if you could help that would be great.

You're confused. My suggestion is that you start reading the stickies in order to get a basic sense of nutrition:

You might also want to learn about proper lifting programs, such as Starting Strength, as I fear your confusion might not be restricted to issues related to nutrition.

If anything I wouldn't to save energy for my lift, but that's just me. Can't imagine it would hurt anything though.

5 miles = 15 minutes = a warmup = perfectly fine
