I am trying to lose a lot of weight right now. My friend told me every once in a while I should have a cheat meal to get my metabolism going. Is this true? If so, then how frequent should I have the cheat meal?

No you don't need one

A structured refeed at very low bf % on the other hand

A splurge won't kill you if its a once in a while thing I used to have a teacher tell me diets are a 90/10 thing for him workout/eat right / Dutchbros coffee was his treat for sticking with a diet for a week

It's recommended for for mental stress relief or just eating something "bad" you haven't had in a long time, so you don't relapse to your old habits.

like always said ^

no cheat meals unless you count calories in them to your intake

and i would do refeed days if planned for dieting longer than 6 weeks :) refeeds = more carbs less protein less fat
